22 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force were equipped with the Douglas Boston in April 1942 and were initially employed in protecting the Australian coast from Japanese submarines. In October they redeployed to New Guinea and flew low level support missions for the Australian army. For this role the squadron fitted extra guns to the nose of all their aircraft and also painted over the bombardier's glass. This aircraft A28-9 was named "She's Apples" and flew no less than 186 missions against the Japanese.
