stick set up is confusing
« on: July 27, 2019, 01:59:59 AM »
I have played ah for maybe 15 years. had several sticks over the years, I dont remember if when I started it was as confusing as it is now, maybe it was.  my x55 stick died on me about 6 7 weeks ago.  ordered 2 sticks and I would set them up the way I remember, but plane would not move up down, left right or rudder.  I returned both sticks, thank god they took them back.  I got the itch to play again and ordered a 3d pro, the first stick i ever had.  now the x55 throttle works.  but when I set up the 3d pro, same problem, plane wouldnt move, took me a couple of hours to figure out the problem was you need to calibrate stick.  so I did, i can fly a fighter again.

today i saw a cv, no problem, i can sink a cv at will.  this time when I jumped into the bomb sight, engines would turn off and I had no control on moving the plane. had to jump back to pilot turn the engines on and try to figure out what the problem was.  so I had to remove all auto set up on bombardier/gunner positions.  now I went to mode 4 set up the stick for pitch, elev and rudder. fine, I never could figure out why the engines would turn off/go idle. but at least I got them to work.

so I jump to the gunner position, i cant fricking move the guns to aim. havent figured them out yet.  and I still havent set up my gv positions yet.

you think after all this years I would know this.  imagine what a new guy who just joined the game and perhaps has a stick cant figure out why he has no control over the plane.  I think this is one of the reasons why new people dont stay long.  they up a plane have no control over it, cant figure it out and then quit.

it reminds me of a game I got for free many years ago, I would start and walk 20 steps and could never figure out how to open a door.  no instructions.  so I deleted it and never played it again.

I think, somehow there should be instructions for new guys on how to set up their stick or keyboard and mouse online with verbal instruction, like set up your pitch it moves the nose of the plane up or down.

Go to Options > Preferences > Controls > Map Controllers and make sure that you have the axis properly assigned to your flight controls and buttons mapped correctly to the functions you want.

I agree, it can be confusing for players, especially new players on how to set up controllers for the game.  IMO, there are also too many mouse clicks needed.  It should be simplified greatly.

of course i did that, that's how I set up my stick.  but I am looking at the gunner postion and for the life of me I cant figure out what I need to do to set up the stick so I can move the stick and aim.

I did a video on this, admittedly long-winded, but I do explain in detail how to set it up and why it works the way it does. Includes axis curves and everything you need to know. Nearly 3,000 views to date.

EDIT: BTW, I made that more than three years ago, but it still works exactly the same way. There are three videos and I have long since forgotten the order, but there is a vehicle setup which is specific for any gunner position. I did a separate video on fleet guns, but I think HTC saw it and decided it was a little too easy and so they changed a few things. No big deal really, the gun details still work it's just that accuracy has dropped off a bit for the fleets.

Thats fine and dandy, but how much trouble would it be to have all stick map modes automatically start out the same as mode 1? At least a guy jumping from a fighter to a bomber will still be able to fly. Everything in this game, by default should be set as easy as possible. A 12 year old plugging his USB game controller should be able to click "fly" and be able to fly.

How about everything that pops into your head goes to the top of the todo list? How much trouble would that be?

Id love to see that list. To me these days the top of the "todo" list should be everything and anything that makes it easier for a new player to get going. Maybe if a few of those things are taken care of players would hang around longer than the first 30 minutes of so.  :aok

fugi if it helps I did copy from mode 1 and it didnt help me move the plane from bombardier position. but perhaps you should have mentioned that it should be coded that moving the plane should use the same settings in bombardier/gunner position.  which now it doesnt.  for example I am not sure why the engines would turn off in bombardier position copying settings from mode 1.  only hitech can answer that or maybe somebody else can.  but for example i still cant figure out how to move the guns in gunner position using the stick.

as for the training videos, cant somebody tell me how to turn them back on?  I cant figure that out.

Vehicles and guns is mode 2 and Bombardier is mode 4. Whatever controller function you want has to be mapped in those modes.

In the settings folder delete this file to turn back on the popout screen with the videos.

Do you honestly think that players/new players want to be dicking around with folders or .cfg files.  I'm pretty sure not.

One of the common complaints on the negative steam reviews, ancient gui for a complicated setup procedure.  If you already play the game its easy to setup, but a new person wouldnt know they need to map the joystick for planes, bombers, gunners, tanks, etc.

Don't worry semp, any excuse to get away with attacking Hitech. Coo and Hagy are both smart enough to know I was answering your specific question. I believe they call it being a protuberance. Watch, they will toss a victim card and play ignorant to this. It's the new dejur in congress so it's good enough for all adults these days. Just like kids do what they watch adults do instead of what they say to do.
