Who is doing what terrain.
« on: August 08, 2000, 06:26:00 PM »
I am willing to work on CBI and Pearl.

I have Erik Shilling's book which has a layout map of the airfields and cities.  I will of course plug in additional feilds.  Anyone else want to work on CBI (China, Burma, India) with me.

Also Pearl, most of the data is easy to get, any takers?

Anyone else doing a terrain and want specific or general assistance I so post em below.  Lets pool our resources and do good work.

I highly suggest using Ogre's Tool to start off your terrains from real world data, and work from there.

Downtown before i start my own Terrain i need to do alot testing with the Editor and learn
the basic things.
After that i think i will do some small H2H Maps for instant Action first.
And after that and the first expirience i may start a huge Map.

I will start working on a Finnish map first thing tonight.    The satellite maps from "that link" are pretty distorted, as Finland is located so north.  But I will give it a try anyway.  I can always edit it later, right?

Let's see how I get the project rolling and how big of a task it is.  Probably that big.

FYI,

I'm working on the Papua New Guinea, New Britain, New Ireland and Solomon Islands map.  At present it's about 1.2:1 scale, (1200 miles a side scaled to 1024 miles on the map).  All things being equal I'll have it complete by the end of the weekend.  It is primarily designed as an air war map and vehicle bases are few and far between.

The holdup at the moment is placing AAA guns around the countryside and creating a map that can be viewed in the clipboard, (The colours of the different quarters don't match).  Once that is tidied away I'll start on the printable maps of the terrain.

I have a short circut racing terrain prepared and will post that up soon.

I have a suggestion if anyone is interested in creating a furball terrain.  Two airfields separated by 2 grid squares.  The airfields are at 15,000 ft and sit inside a bowl which has mountains 40,000 ft high around it.  The bottom of the bowl is a maze of canyons up to 8000 ft and above 8000 is clear air.

Anyways it's 1am and I gotta get some sleep this week.

Spotcha in the Air,

raxx

Well I've got all the stuff downloaded, includeing that huge world ground cover file.

IF (Big IF) I can figure it all out I thought I'd try a Phillippene terrain.  Lots of small islands and ocean with a few larger land masses for ground vehicles.

Pearl is also tempting.

Does anyone know when working in "Mapmaker" how many degree's to get a 1-1 scale map?

Camo,

Don't necessarily be disturbed by the distorted nature of the GTOPO data in the area of Finland.  We have become accustomed to seeing land masses using certain map projections designed to be pleasing to the eye, rather than accurate in distance.  The GTOPO maps fall in this catagory as well.

If you read the help page for my utility (MapMaker) you'll see that I have a pretty elaborate routine available for correcting distortion.  It will create a map that is as accurate as possible in distance.  However, while accurate in distance, it will not necessarily *look* correct.  For game purposes preserving distance-scale is more important than overall appearance IMO.

Unfortunately, it not possible to make a correct looking map that is correctly distance-scaled using a flat surface when your source is a spheroid    War is hell.

Good luck on the terrain building.  Sounds like an interesting region.

Ghosth,

There really isn't a conversion factor between degrees and distance as it varies based on latitude.  At the equator it should be roughly 0.0045 degree/km (0.0028 degree/mile).

The best way to get the 1:1 is to take your best guess using a map with distances and lat/lon on it.  Then:

1. Select a square region (using the map) that measures 512x512 miles and get the corresponding lat/long and degree-width.

2. Once it is in MapMaker use the distance measuring feature to measure the height and width of the region.

3. Increase/Decrease the degree width parameter until the distance measures 512x512 miles (824x824 km).  When the terrain measures 512x512mi in MapMaker, the final exported product will be 1:1

Scaling is fun, ain't it

Raxx, we could REALLY use that furball terrain.

I'm quite busy at the moment, but as soon as I can I'm going to look at this.

Ideally, you make a map with several setups like this, all separated by very high peaks.  Say one is 1 field v 1 field (smalls), one is 2 v 2 fields, etc.  Could also include some funky ground pounder setups as well.  Once we had the bugs worked out of it, we could possibly get it posted up as a "duelling" arena....

This would simplify 1v1 all the way to squad level duels big time!

On a serious note, I started using the editor last night, and I think i am getting the hang of it. I am having the same problems with the "water" tile as mentioned before (all black, doesn't cover red numbers in the sector at all), but we'll se ehow it looks after i get done. I REALLY like that Furball arena, and I would LOVE to test it out

Also looking forward to a Pearl Harbor arena with all them P-40's sitting on the tarmac outside the hangar waiting for bombs :P Another reason to Model the P-40!

Great Job to all the T.E. beta team.

Ogre, I've managed to get up to speed with the editor. Thanks for your amazing tool, it is a breeze to do the map with it!

As the finnish coast has 10000 and 1 islands, I found the "no coast filtering" produce better results.  All the capes and little islands come out better that way.

Here's the first pic I took in H2H.  I've redone the map twice after that, as well as the clipboard map.

I'll keep on working on this.

Hehe, I'm downloading the stuff at home for an Aleutian Theatre map 'cause I live in Alaska of course. Can't wait to make the runway and lake I fly my 172 out of in the summer, will be cool   Hope it's not to tough to do MT. Mckinley, I live close to it but never fly around it as there is a lot of traffic (flight seeing tours) buzzing around it all day long. There is no runway or tower there, but it has it's own traffic freq.! I've been in a 737 that has cirlced the summit, but now I get to fly my P38 around it and straffe the climbers, I mean sheep <big evil grin> LOL.
