I was trying to identify the aircraft on the Gambier, and I came across a really interesting after-action report of the Battle of Leyte Gulf by the pilots aboard. They flew FM-2s and TBMs (large plane for an escort carrier). One of the pilots mentions that another of the escort carriers had F6Fs.

There is a photo of the battleship Yamato firing directly at the Gambier.  It is most likely that the Yamato sank her (though two battleships were firing on the Gambier, the Yamato was the closest).

I was stationed with VC-10 at gtmo '71-'73 as an AE
at the time VC-10 was flying F-8K/Us and S2c
I believe the squadron was decommissioned sometime around '76 or '86
When standing the POW watch, I would read the squadron logs in the ready room which
chronicled VC-10s time on the Gambier Bay and had pictures on the ready room wall
