Tell you what, lets start a conversation on it. As I always say if the majority of people want KOTH with no or low range icons we can do, or at least try it.
You do still see who's close by looking at message window and seeing who's on range, but that's not precise.
One thing that makes me sort of against it is KOTH was, at least as far as I thought, sort of for the masses that fly in the main arena, melee arena, the latest name for it, and most arena settings are similar to that. For example, that's why we use Fuel Burn of 2.0. Same as main and if it changed there I'd consider it in KOTH.
I think it would discourage newer players more than experienced ones too and every new face in KOTH is a good one.
Again if I could have anything it would be for old in tower range channel. There were so many good conversations { informational, tutorial, social, and disciplinary as KOTH players monitor each other } on it and that whole aspect is gone. It's also driven people, probably not as much as I think it does I'll admit, to use third party communication software. And again IMO, 3rd party coms and KOTH do not go well together. In reality they are most likely just more prolific and work better and have developed more than way back then
And TwinBoom, thanks for this post. Back in my coconut I wanted to open something like this from your post in, was it , "how have we lost so many people..."
If you've flown in KOTH before and don't now, why not? What would make you come back?
