BTW when flying Jugs in scenarios we seem to always get the short stick just for flying one. I've never flown anything in a scenario involving Jugs but D11s and D25s'.

What exactly is the time frame of this event?  There are three models above the D25 that have tail numbers beginning with 42.  The D26, 27 and 28. according to Bodies book Thunderbolt from Seversky to Victory.  In the book the D27 had an increase of 130HP from water injection.

Ya..I know we don't have them.  There is an in game gap in development here.

I've never flown anything in a scenario involving Jugs but D11s and D25s'.

D-11's, D-25's, and D-40's all have about the same performance.

However, we always try to use the best representative of what was in the historical battle, subject to balance.

In this case, at the time of battle (Dec 1944 - Jan 1945) the 506th FS seems to have still had some razorbacks, and they had D-25's, according to:
http://www.winkton.net/pages/p47swinkton.htm

We went with D-25's.

D-40's and D-25's have identical performance without WEP.  With WEP, the D-40 has negligibly better performance.

My recollection was that the D40 had a significantly better climb rate on WEP.

But it's been awhile since I've flown one.
