F4U 1A vs 1D
« on: March 17, 2020, 10:30:24 PM »
Curious why the charts show the 1A as faster yet having the same climb rate. If the 1D has more drag or weight shouldn't it climb slower too?

Edit: is it the extra fuel of the 1A that the charts are based on maybe?

Top speed will be influenced more by differences in drag, climb rate more by differences in excess thrust at low speed. Generally speaking aircraft fly faster due to low drag but climb on their prop's. Yes, extra weight makes a difference, you can check that yourself by checking your climb rate at 25% and 100% fuel.

Hope that helps...

My understanding is that the 1d is heavier and dragged. Yet the charts for it and the 1c both have the same climb rate as the 1a, hence my question

If you look at the charts in the hanger they show the weight that gives that performance. Compare that weight with the different fuel load weights.  The performance charts on the website don't have the weight.

I believe the delta has pylons fixed on the wing where the 1A does not. Making it draggier.
With 50% fuel or less the two should weigh pretty much the same since the wing tanks are not being used on the 1A.
I just checked and the AH charts use the same weight (12,175 lbs.) for both the 1A, and 1D.

Difference between climbing and max speed is parasitic drag is a bigger factor at high speed vs climb speed so a small difference in parasitic drag makes a bigger difference at max speed.

So for them to weigh the same for the charts, the difference must be due to the 1a's extra fuel capacity.

The top speed difference is due to the 1D's wing creating more drag because of the hard point pylons on the wing.
The data in the charts for both the 1A, and the 1D is taken with both aircraft weighing the same, so the extra fuel capacity of the 1A is not a factor.

At 50% fuel the 1A still carries more gas because of its higher capacity.
