« on: April 24, 2020, 05:55:11 PM »
my computer went on a reboot loop yesterday.  I took it apart and cleaned it up a bit, it was bad.

anyway, does the gpu fans always stay on?  I thought they did.  mine are off.  but computer seems to be working ok.

Hi semp.  I think it depends on the GPU.  I haven't had a 970, but I think some only power up as needed, but I think they should at least spin up on powering up, and certainly under high demand as in running a demanding graphics load.  Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will jump in with a more clear answer for you.

thanks, just figured it out. only 1 of the fans work.  and yesterday being a hot day, kept overheating the vc and shutting down.  so closed the window in my office, brought another fan and have ac on.

did a test for 10 minutes and temps down go above 85.  should be ok for a couple of days.  now to figure out where to get a video card and a refrigerator. the freezer went out yesterday.

I took the side of my computer and used a regular fan on high pointed at my video card until I could get a replacement fan. Maybe that will work for the time being.

I'm guessing you're not using anything like Afterburner to control the card? On my MSI 2060 card, at startup the fans give a short blast at full speed and then both shut off. I've read it's a feature designed to blow the dust out. The fans will then sit at idle until the card reaches a certain temp and  then come on and ramp up or down as needed automatically. I don't recall my 1060 doing the blast thing but it did do the idle fans thing. The idea there is to make it quieter if you're just surfing the net at next to no load on the GPU rather than have the fans raising hell all the time. I have a custom fan curve set up in Afterburner that works much the same but is a bit more aggressive as temps go up to keep the card cool. I found it didn't work as well as I'd like on "full automatic not messed around with".

I've got a GTX970 and it's pretty quiet most of the time. It starts spinning when there's more load like during a game. Lighter games can run for a while until the spinning starts.

This is my second 970, the previous one worked well when I installed it to a friend's "new" computer. After a couple of months my friend told that his games can freeze all of the sudden. We installed MSI Afterburner and lowered the thresholds for the fans to start spinning and the problem hasn't occurred ever since. The default fan profile of that MSI card looked pretty strange, letting the temperature rise to some 60 deg C until even starting. We set the starting point to some 40-45 IIRC and made the curve pretty steep for higher temperatures and having it at max speed already at 70 or so.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

That's exactly what I found on my card Biz and that was how I cured the problem. I don't even have the fans set to run at 100% tho. Last 3 cards I've had were their gaming series. I get them for the totally awesome coolers.

I gave my 28 year old side by side Kenmore fridge to my father-in-law to replace the little one he had in his shop. Great beer fridge with a big freezer.

You won't find the ones today lasting that long. All I ever replaced on it was a timer for the ice maker.

My current LG super efficient fridge has a bunch of electronics. I doubt it will last near as long.

If the electronics fail it'll cost you near as much to repair as to replace the whole frig. Best part is these days very little is brazed on the refrig system. Lines are epoxied together. They fail. Brilliant!

Might want to make sure that delivery means not just to your house but into your house. I got an email from Best Buy weeks back when this crap started saying for safety reasons they wouldn't have appliances delivered into your home. They'd bring it to your house but you'd have to get it inside. No idea what Sears is doing but might be a good idea to check.

Right now most places deliver to your door and no farther.

Just a single item, have them load it in your truck and bring it home yourself. That or have the kids get bring it for you.... even a neighbor would probably help.

and to close this thread and thank's everybody for the advise.  dont ever tell your friends your fridge went out.  trust me, dont, I have a second fridge in my livingroom that i have to get rid of.  I could have made so much money if I had recorded them bringing in the fridge. and you guys complain about the lack of fights.
