Convergence Discrepanies
« on: May 03, 2020, 03:20:01 PM »
For all you "300-" convergence pilots, how many of your kills are within the specified distance? Now I'm NOT a good fighter pilot, but I rarely get within 300 yards of a target in a dog fight. Most of the time when I get shot down, the enemy was in excess of 600 yards. Something just doesn't add up.

Kenia,

What you see and what the other guy sees arent always the same, mostly do to latency.

It doesnt matter what convergence a pilot uses if you get hit, you get hit. Personally 300 yds would be a long convergence for me,most my guns are set between 275 and 150 depending on the gun and it's placement. I use 150 on the 30 mm hubgun of a 109,but thats just "my" preference.

So lets say you have a spit with wing guns set to 300 yds. At 600 yds the rounds are the same distance apart as when they leave the barrels, they've just crossed sides. Now how much they drop is a different thing and depends on muzzle V and the amount of dispersion coaded in.

 hope that helps.

I think that you will find that most of the kills at that range will be from BnZers  51, 190, blue planes...etc ... I think most fifty cal guys are up to 600 convergence
Most of the birds that get into turny bird fights bring in the convergence..and then theres the big round planes..which need them in close
... and then there are some who seem to have a really good aim...

Other than when things are running from me most of my kills are in close quarters..400 or less... I do manage the odd good 600 deflection shot... but that is usually so far under my nose it is a real hit and miss thing...

most times my kills come from a desperate BnZer trying to get the kill before the others and hit the deck hahahaha... I like it when I can get that to happen hahahaha

I fly for the snapshot, so most of my kills are within 300 I'd guess. I am checking film alot these days, I'll check yesterday's K-4 run to see the average distance.

Some people are just very good at long range shots.  Also, take a look a the type of plane.  If the guns are in the wings, convergence is a big factor.  If the guns are in the nose, not so much.

I set the convergence for every single gun individually and according to the job I've assigned the plane.

I worry more about the vertical convergence of the various guns and pay zero attention to the horizontal.

I wish there were a 900yd convergence setting.

Thanks everyone for the excellent feedback. I am currently running most of my planes 575, which seems to be a sweet spot for me.

You'd hit with the 30mm more in your K4 at 350 :old:

Nobody's mention cross-convergence or its merits or lack of, yet.

Close to 87% of my kills are at 0 alt.

Depending on trees of course.

I have convergence set at 200 for all turn fighters, spits, zekes, etc.  ponies, p47 at 300.

btw I can get hits up to 1000 with both convergence on a plane that is just flying away and level.  surprises the heck out of many.

Causes a long range Shotgun effect lack of accuracy beyond the Crossing point. Good for Assist collecting.
