Remember

Leaders must lead. Be the first boots on the ground and the last boots off.
“When we go into battle, I will be the first one to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off. And I will leave no one behind. Dead or alive, we will come home together. So help me God.” —Lt. Co. Hal Moore, August 1965, Fort Benning, Ga.

General Moore's words ring true.

You find you never do forget the ones that died alongside you and years later you wonder why did you live thru the rocket explosion that ripped the life from one of your platoon Sergeants. Still no answers 52 years later.

I shared the chopper ride that evacuated me from that firefight with the body of this Sergeant that had just joined the company in the field a few weeks before.

I let his little brother back in the states know his brother wasn't alone that day when I was back in the U.S.. Every memorial day since I have communicated with his brother in some way.

Obligation to not forget them ?  Hell it's a driving force that will never let you forget them.
