This razorback P-47D-5 was paid for with War Bonds purchased by Republic Aircraft employees who named it "Republic Employees Racer". In service it was shared by two pilots of the 328th Fighter Squadron who each had one side of the fuselage decorated with their own personal nose art. The left side featured Lt James Laing's "Jamie Boy", while the right side had Lt Robert H. "Punchy" Powell Jr.'s "The West, By Gawd, Virginian" across a map of his home state. Lt Powell survived his tour with the 328th scoring 5 kills in P-47s and P-51s but Lt Laing was shot down over France in 1944 and ended the war as a POW.
