Potent Cock
« on: July 14, 2020, 03:09:58 AM »
Toad requested I skin this B-25C for him, thank you to Lyric1 for supplying the info for it.

"Potent Cock", a B-25D of the 501st Bomb Squadron, flew low level straffing and bombing attacks against Japanese airfields, shipping and bases in New Guinea. For this purpose its bomb aimer position was modified to accommodate an extra four 0.5 inch machine guns. By the end of May 1944 it had flown 76 missions and sunk four ships. It continued flying until September when it was written off in a Japanese bombing raid on its airfield.

Great looking skin, Greebo.   I never noticed the two-toned green before - what is the story on the Forest Green around the edges of wing and tail assembly?

Excellent work as always! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

The medium green splotches on the leading and trailing edges of the flying surfaces was an early war USAAF camouflage scheme designed to break up the silhouette of the aircraft. This scheme was discontinued some time in 1942. One of the photos I have of the aircraft shows this type of camo on the LH vertical tail.

are you sure about this?

in my P-40 photo references, it seems that the medium green splotches did not appear until some time in 1943. They are rare on K and L models and non existent on earlier types, but on the M and N models, they are very common.

Yes you are right, it was a late rather an early war scheme. "Dirty Dora" had the same camouflage field-applied in 1943 when replacement aircraft began appearing with the scheme so I guess this was the same.

Many, many thanks, Greebo! That is beautiful. A great job!

My dad, like just about every WW2 pilot, didn't fly the same aircraft on every mission. I finally got the squadron records though and went through them. He flew in this aircraft in both seats.

Interestingly, his first 3 flights in the left seat were in Potent Cock. I suspect that's because the noob ACs got the most war weary of the squadron's aircraft. I don't think they put the brand new ACs in the newest aircraft. If a noob is going to screw up and lose a plane, well, you want it to be one of the worn out ones!

Again, my thanks to Greebo!

You are welcome Toad. I have just submitted and approved the skin so it should be available in the MA once Hitech gets round to processing the current batch. He hasn't got back to me about Quitch yet either.
