I have read that one problem with the rubber de-icing boots was them getting cut by flak shrapnel, so strips of rubber could then peel back across the wing and tail and jam up the control surfaces. I guess that removing them would also save a little weight and reduce drag.

I think damage-induced drag was a concern.  Boots were somewhat heavy--every pound shaved helped--but the aerodynamic penalty was negligible.    Being one less system to maintain on a plane that would be destroyed soon any way probably had its advantages.

Wish I had the real answer.  The men who knew are long gone, sadly.
