The Right Stuff (Remake)
« on: October 01, 2020, 04:53:30 PM »
Weird.  I just recently "reread" the book on Audible.  Loved the movie from the 80's.  Hope they don't stuff it.

Oh.  Just realized it's a series.  That might not be bad.  It will give them more time to drill down deeper.

Going to be really hard to top the original film.

Sad part is that there's so much other great material from the early space program to mine. Why try to remake a near perfect film?

Going to be really hard to top the original film.

Indeed.

But I don't think it is necessary to top it.  It merely needs to not suck.  If nothing else, it might reintroduce the material to a younger audience who never saw the old movie.  Maybe some of those my be interested in going back and giving it a view.

Given that it is a 8 part series maybe it can make up for having as stellar a cast as the original movie by at least taking a deep exploration of the material.  Depth they couldn't afford in even a 3 hour movie.

But yeah, the original will be a all time classic forever.

Hey Pancho? I was looking at all those pictures on your wall and I was wondering why a fancy pilot like Slick over there doesn't have his picture up there. What do you have to do to get your picture up on that wall anyway?

You have to die, sweets.

No actor today could do it justice.

As far as I am concerned I've already seen the best.  The cast was spectacular and the acting was superb.  In the opinion of a grumpy old man acting today isn't as important as it used to be.

1.)  You need a good story.
2.)  You need actors who aren't dependent on CGI.  When one watches an older GOOD movie watch how the facial expressions were used, the eyes etc  It's called acting.  Movies like Key Largo, The Quiet Man and others of that ilk one notices the effort put into acting.  There are far fewer good actors to day then there were 50 years ago.  This is just my opinion.

Also.ever notice when a remake comes out we are disappointed?  In this case I would not make an effort to watch what I call a perfect first try.

I truly dislike most so-called "remakes". There are a few exceptions, such as True Grit. Remakes demonstrate the lack of originality in the film industry. Trying to cash in on a proven story. CGI reduces production costs substantially, and makes it easier to turn a profit. If you saw the recent Midway film, it was little more than a cartoon. Now, the original Midway was no prize either. It tried to ride the coat tails of Tora,Tora,Tora. To the extent that a lot of that film's footage was regurgitated. Its story and script were awful, and, unlike Tora,Tora,Tora, it took considerable license with history. As for me, the original Right Stuff omitted a great deal of the other research work and personalities of immediate post war aerospace development. It was Wolfe's fanboy tribute to Yeager and Glenn, essentially. Still, it was a good story with excellent script and terrific cast. Any attempt to improve on it will fall short, in my opinion.

Series will allow hollywood to recreate history

Maybe squeeze a woman in where there was none

As usual they can't leave well enough alone.

Or are they that brain dead they can't come up with an original idea..

Hello Gentlemen!

Yes, I still have the Jeep... 12 years old now. And, a pickup and the wife's Kia (I don't care for that car).

Lot's of changes since I quit AH. Lost my wife to cancer several years ago. Remarried this past November. Retired in February, moved south. Live near Patrick AFB on Florida's Space Coast. Enjoying retirement. Consulting for an Aerospace company, just a few hours monthly. Traveling often. Headed to Tennessee's Smokey Mountains for a several days. Some cooler fall weather.

How are all of you guys doing? Hopefully life has been tolerable.
My regards,

Widewing

Life has been great here in Texas.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Happy to hear you are coping well. Grats on getting married again. Finding someone to share life's experiences with is important.

Stay safe, have a good trip.
