25th Sentai Ki-84
« on: October 21, 2020, 03:05:12 AM »
Thank you  to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this aircraft.

This Ki-84 was one of the first pre-production batch of 94 aircraft, and left the factory in a natural metal finish. It was allocated to the 22nd Sentai who at some point applied a mottled camouflage scheme to the upper surfaces. The 22nd were the first unit to be equipped with the Ki-84 in March 1944 and after a lengthy period of training with the new aircraft in Japan they were deployed to China in August. Here they claimed 40 kills for the loss of six pilots before handing their remaining aircraft, including this one, over to the 25th Sentai in October and returning to Japan. The 25th's unit markings were applied on the vertical tail, after a solid coat of green had covered over the 22nd Sentai markings. At the end of the war this was one of the surviving IJAAF aircraft handed over to the Americans on Formosa, by which time much of the mottled scheme had worn off the cowl and other places of the airframe.

That is superb, Greebo.  Looks photo-real; incredible job of weathering and paint fading and wear.

Would this aircraft have tangled with black-tailed 23rd FG P-51s over China?

Thanks guys. Sorry I don't know if the 25th Sentai ever encountered the 23rd FG over China.

There are a few Kamikaze aircraft amongst the existing Ki-84 skins and I'd like to update some of these and also skin a few new ones. Does anyone have a problem with Kamikaze aircraft as skins?

Great looking Frank. I don't want to say that I am against it, but I'd certainly question the motive.

History is history.   People die in war.

Skin them.  Snowflakes can fly something else.

From what I understand, the Ki-84's used by Kamikaze units were rarely used for suicide attacks. Seems that they provided cover for the planes laden with bombs.

Absolutely amazing work Greebo. Love the subtle, dirty, BMF with chipped paint.

Keep them coming!
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

That’s amazing, I can’t imagine how long that took to do that pattern. As for Kamikaze skins, why not. I’m sure we have bomber skins that dropped on civilian targets.

 :aok Great character, very unique.

For me if the plane saw action in the war it should be eligible to be skinned. I'd be less apposed to a Kamikaze skin than say a corsair skin that never saw action.  :bolt:

Thanks for the input guys, as no one seems to have an issue with this I'll do some skins from Kamikaze groups later on. Lyric1 has found photos of some interesting schemes from these units.

It makes sense they'd have used the Ki-84s as escorts for the Kamikazes, apart from wasting their best aircraft the Ki-84 was harder to fly for inexperienced pilots than the more expendable A6Ms and Ki-43s etc.

That camouflage is quite impressive and must have taken forever. :rock

Kamikazes?

Why not?
