The 47th BG flew exclusively in the Med theatre, first with A-20s in North Africa, Sicily and Italy and from late 1944 with the A-26. During this transition the group began converting some of their old A-20s into night intruders, straffing and bombing German communications with solo low level attacks. "Black Widder" was one of these intruders, flown by the 97th BS CO, Colonel Taylor. It was painted all over matt black and equipped with four gun pods from a B-25 attached to the fuselage at a slightly downward angle.
