All he is doing is trying to lower the bar so that when he gets around to trying to pardon himself and his kids, people will have already been so desensitized to the sleaze that that they won’t be shocked.
He can pardon his kids. Slimy, but doable. He may think he can pardon himself, because he thinks he is a king. When prosecutor go after him later, that will be challenged and prove not to be durable. His only chance would be to resign before the 20th and let Pence pardon him. That stinks, but would probably stand.
But you know who can’t be pardoned? Corporations. Like Trump corporations. They can be investigated, their assets seized, their officers arrested or turned states witness. Just ask Al Capone if the IRS doesn’t have teeth.
You know who else can’t be protected by a pardon? Anyone facing state charges. NY prosecutors are waiting in the shadows with a stack of sealed indictments for Trump, Ivanka, and Uday and Qusay.
They are licking their chops thinking about the legal reaming they have planned. When they are done, there is not going to be anything left but a greasy orange spot.
And just because the charges are filed by NY state prosecutors doesn’t mean they can’t be assisted by the full power and might (and records) of the IRS, FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. You know, in a gesture of Federal/state cooperation.
You can already smell the burnt toast.
