Anyone can fly a plane any style, although it might be difficult. You can turn n burn a p51D all day against many pilots in the game and perhaps beat them no matter what they are flying. That is the name of the game, however, that's not the style that the p51 actually is. The plane is a BnZ plane thru and thru. Much like every American plane, simply because thats how they were designed given our position in the war. Some planes like the f4u can turn well, but are total slugs low n slow on the deck. To be the most successful, it should be flown BnZ style and only turn fight in desperate situations.
A rule of thumb i generally go by is, if the plane can dive faster than 500 knots, its a BnZ plane. IMO, they style the plane should be flown in is not necessarily the style that people fly the plane with. Some planes like the P38 and K4 can be used as both as they have great acceleration and E retention, though its iffy if they are actually truely BnZ style planes. The p38 is more BnZ than the K4, but generally both the planes are very similar even though they are totally different body types. Just because a plane can go fast flying straight, that doesn't necessarily make it a BnZ plane. BNZ generally refers to its ability to dive fast and zoom away without another plane catching it.
Most axis planes are not BnZ planes besides 190s and ta152s. These are pure BnZ planes. Sure you can attempt to turn them on the deck, but its not gonna work out too well for you. Planes like the Ki84, Nik, spits, la7s, 109s, are knife fighter planes. They are not BnZ planes nor TnB planes. They fit right in the middle. They should be flown much like how a shark eats its prey. Fly fast at mid alt and strike quickly, use defense maneuvers to shake cons and gain the advantage thru overshoot. They typically take a good amount of more skill to be successful in because they generally get tied up on the deck in the furball and get picked easier than BnZ planes. BnZ planes catch them and you have to know how to escape that. Thats why they typically have lower overall K/D than the BnZ planes. You also have pure TnB planes like the ki43, A6m, and generally early war planes besides the P40.
Any plane can be flown any style, its just that some planes are better at BnZ than others and should only be flown BnZ if you want to be successful, while some planes cannot be BnZ planes because they are not fast enough in the dive and cannot simply zoom away when a con jumps the 6.
It's important to learn these styles correctly in these planes to be more successful in them. Sure you can fly a plane any style, it's just going to make your situation much more difficult, not saying you shouldn't try either. Sometimes its fun to make it more difficult.
