"Old Rusty" was the P-38J flown by Lt. Warren Campbell of the 94th FS while based at Foggia in Italy during 1945. Lt. Campbell continued serving in the Air Force after the war and later served in Vietnam as a Colonel. The yellow panels were the squadron's ID markings, the other 1st FG squadrons at this time having black or red panels.
The 94th FS began the war in mid 1942 as part of the 8th Air Force and flew missions over Northern France for a couple of months. In August they were transferred to the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean. Here they flew bomber escort and ground attack sorties in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. In November 1943 they were transferred again, this time to the 15th Air Force where until the end of the war they flew long range escort missions to targets in Southern Europe.
