Lest have a dog thread.
« on: January 28, 2021, 11:27:28 AM »

"Blitz" is almost 8yo and a true soldier. He's my first GSD and uncanny in Intelligence. Loyal, fearless, and most of all "smart" he was an easy one to train. He's trained to voice, hand, and whistle commands. I didn't even want him but my wife wanted another dog so I figure I might as well get one that earns his keep.

This was my last hunting dog. Losing Cayenne broke my heart so much I never started another hunter. He was a wonder in the field and a loving, loyal partner at all times. RIP Cayenne. I put his ash's in a corn field we hunted together many times. He's still there, waiting for me.

We just lost my Wife's Dachshund (Sabastian) day before yesterday. She had just returned home and her dog was fine. She went in the bedroom and heard a blood curdling yelp. He had a stroke. Vet was unable to stabilize him. He was 14 years old.

Needless to say, it is pretty dreary around my home right now. My Black Lab is looking around for his little brother.

Thanks... it's all part of having animals that do not live as long as we do. I have 5 buried in the yard. Zeek, my previous black lab was 17 and had cancer. Napoleon, my Wife's other dachshund (half brother of the one that just died) had a cancer that was deemed inoperable... he was 8. Koko my red chow died of old age, 14. Zeus, my Roti was poisoned by someone. I never found out. I had my suspicions and they moved far away a short time later. Probably a good thing.

Anyone that would poison an innocent animal should be burned at the stake.

Losing the animals was reason enough for not wanting another one but I have to say training my GSD has been a bright spot in my day. Ive never owned a Shep before and this one was just born to train and work. My wife wants another, a small dog, but Im not up for it. I want Blitz to be my last cause Im getting to old for training.

We had a sad moment last year. My kid brought home a Husky, about 14 mos old. My instincts told me the dog was trouble. He was a beautiful animal and had a good side but was untrusting and wouldn't ever come to your hands. I have a rule, never pick a pup that wont come to your hands. Anyway my wife bent down to get his empty bowl from her and he mauled her. It wasn't a "nip" it was a maul requiring hospitalization.

I had to get an emergency order to put the dog down humanely. I hated to do it but I just can't put up with that and I sure as heck couldn't gift the dog to anyone.

Dachshund's are great little dogs. Ive owned companion dogs for my hunting animals and we've considered Dachshund's, they are full of personality. Ive owned several Labs. They are great dogs.

Charlie. One year old Collie/lab mut.  Pick him off Craig's list from a farm down state.  After all the parasites were gone, he has been fantastic. Full of energy yet does not want to be alone. He likes eating and trying to eat. Does not care for fetch once he gets the object, rather he moves on for the next moving or smelly object.  He runs all day with me at work.  Barks at intruders only to give them kisses.  Poops as far away as possible. We love our canine family member, and he loves his momma.

Muh dude, Matsu.

he is named after Sadaaki Akamatsu, WW2 Japanese fighter ace.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

If I could post pix I would post one of my 2 dogs,I have a french and an english bulldog.

For years I owned terriers,I dont like working dogs as I call them robot dogs that will do anything you want with little or no skill in training. You dont train terriers, they train you! Now if you happen to have a terrier that will do as you say you have a special dog,I once owned a UDX certified Bullterrier,AFAIK it was the only Bullterrier in North America that had obtained the UDX certificate but that was back in 1980 or so.

The bulldogs train easily, too easy actually. They arent much of a challenge and are the next thing to a robot dog. They are stubborn though but that is over ridden by a high food drive that makes them far too easy to train. The English is becoming a hit on my wifes FB page,he's a striking fellow with a deep red color. I had him imported from Poland, the frenchy was imported from Hungary and she is a blue grey color. The frenchy runs the house,at only 20 pounds you'd think the 90lb English would just have his way with her but NOOOOOO,she knows jujitsu!!!! :O

So Sorry Shuffler...

My 5 year old mini doxie is my best pal and I hate to think how something like that would affect me.
Best to you and your wife, some folks can't understand the bond with our hairy friends.

Lost my 10yr old Golden to cancer 2 years ago and still affects me when I see Goldens romping.

Most of us know that pain.  I saved this from one of the old (1970s?) American Rifleman magazines:

WHERE TO BURY A DOG

By Ben Hur Lampman
Portland Oregonian
September 11, 1925

A subscriber of the Ontario Argus has written to the editor asking, “Where shall I bury my dog?”  It is asked in advance of death.

We would say to the Ontario man that there are various places in which a dog may be buried.  We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought.  This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave.  Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good dog.  Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder.  These are good places, in life or in death.  Yet it is a small matter.  For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps.  On a hill where the wind is unrebuked, and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land, where most exhilarating cattle graze.  It is all one to the dog, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost – if memory lives.  But there is one best place to bury a dog.

If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call – come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again.  And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there.  People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog.  Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.  The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.
