TBM down on Florida beach
« on: April 18, 2021, 10:20:10 AM »
TBM ditches just north of Patrick AFB, south of Cocoa Beach. Yesterday, I was up in a UH1H Huey, southwest of the Florida 404 causeway to Patrick AFB and Satellite Beach. A few miles north, this TBM went into the surf. Didn't hear about it until we were back on the ground. Lot's of beach denizens recorded it on video. This is the best one as to understanding what happened. Heavy misfire. Sounds like fuel starvation. Then, it simply quit. Seems rather sudden too. Pilot kept his cool. Pitched up when flaps were lowered. Right wing dipped as it began to stall. This wouldn't be the first time a pilot switched to a near empty tank... Of course, I'm speculating... But, this sure sounded like it ran out of gas. No smoke streaming. Could be a ruptured carburetor diaphragm, but that is very unlikely. Doesn't look or sound to be a engine mechanical issue.

Impressive.   That link wouldn't load video but here's a YouTube video.  Glad no one was hurt.

There is a large group of people in the water just beyond where he came to a stop.

It appears he pulled the nose up slightly to avoid people in the water ahead of him.  Regardless, very well done. A textbook water landing.

A you tube video came out today indicating that there had been smoke noticed coming from the TBM while in formation with the B25. The pictures aren't very good but one does look like there is white smoke trailing from the TBM while they were orbiting near the Cape Canaveral airstrip, which was designated as an emergency access landing point for the show. The guy does a LOT of talking almost all of which seems to be personal speculation so I advise taking it with a pound, not a grain of salt.

Wasted many minutes of my life waiting for anything of substance from that channel.

That’ll be the cheapest part of that restoration.

You think they'll restore that thing again?

In the 1960's in New Brunswick, a province in eastern Canada, I flew a Cessna 182 to lead 3 TBM's that were being used to spray the forests in order to limit damage caused by the Spruce Budworm. They're were small squadrons of TBM's all over the province tasked with this job.
I flew there 2 seasons in my youth and was offered a TBM in my second season. Considering that we had lost 4 TBM's to the forests in my first season (no pilots hurt - those tanks cut trees down when they splash into the forest), I respectfully declined and continued to birddog in the Cessna. We only lost 3 in my 2nd and last season. Much like DDT, the spray program was stopped.

With enough 💵💵💵, anything can be restored.  The speed with which they pulled it out of the water and readied for transport seems to indicate something.

It’ll fly again. It’s a navy bird. It’s seen worse
