I was asked to skin this Spitfire Mk Vb for next month's FSO by Swareiam.
601 Squadron was formed as a reserve squadron of the RAF in 1925 by a group of wealthy young amateur pilots and so became known unofficially as "The millionaire's club". During the second world war however its replacement pilots came from all walks of life and given the attrition levels during the Battle of Britain it was soon no more well-heeled than any other. In April 1941 the squadron was ferried to Malta on the USS Wasp where it fought for several months. It was then transferred to Egypt to fight in the desert war. For the rest of the war the squadron covered the Allied Armies' advance through Tunisia, Sicily and Italy.
This 601 Squadron Spitfire Mk Vb was based in Egypt in late 1942.
