Midway (2019)
« on: May 07, 2021, 02:40:45 PM »
I did a *brief* search, and I couldn’t find a thread.  So, I was wondering what everyone thought of the movie Midway that came out in 2019. Just got a chance to watch it for the first time and thought it was decent.

Funny as we were just discussing this on Discord the other night. perd posted a video and this pretty much ruined it for me:

I've never seen it, didn't expect a historically accurate film, but good grief.

Sadly just like most Hollywood attempts,  unrealistic and always wrapped around some idiotic love story

I think a series like baa baa black sheep about the battle of Britain would be interesting.

It could flow into the yanks coming over and into the European air war

From what I heard, it more followed one person rather than the whole event.  Not saying that is a bad thing, but I was expecting the whole event to be covered, much like how they did with Tora, Tora, Tora!, and Midway (1976).

Now if they were to properly remake those two movies...  A lot more information is available about what happened during these battles now than they had access to then.  The only sad part is there are nowhere near as many flyable gals now as there were then, plus with all the rules and regulations in place that didn't exist then that do now, oof.   So it would need to be CG.

If I recall correctly the movie sort of begins with the worst CGI cluster-truck of a sequence of Pearl Harbor I just quit like 10min in.

Modern movies suck for the most part. Just constant reboots of past events and past movies/franchises. Star Wars anyone? the last decade hasnt had one solid piece of Star Wars content besides Mandalorian. or even one new IP that I can remember. Maybe Game of Thrones... but that series ended in a hot garbage fire.

Edit oh! 1917 was a good movie. Only decent new one I've seen for the past few years that isn't recycling hollywood trash again and again for cheap and easy $$$

It's probably the best movie you're likely to see on the subject for years to come. I don't remember much romance, unlike Pearl Harbor. They also got the sequence of events right, and more truth than the original movie. You do have to forgive the way they portray flying. That's always going to be a given with movies. The sound effects are top notch, too.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I enjoyed it for what it is.

I used to be a rivet counter and demanded all the historyz.

I gave up on that years ago. Life's way to short for that.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

It's not surprising that there is "more truth" to Midway 2019, as there is a lot more information of the battle than there was for Midway 1976.  Okay, I've gotten me curious enough about it.  :)

But I can't help imagine if they properly redid Tora! Tora! Tora! and Midway 1976, how those would come out.  Obviously all battle scenes would be CG now.  :headscratch:

So just like the 1976 version then.

Speaking of WWII movies, right now Tora!Tora!Tora!, The Longest Day, Battle of Britain and a few others are available free on Youtube but they will get rotated out at some point.

I just watched Battle of Britain beginning to end for the first time and man was I disappointed.

I enjoyed watching the 2019 movie Midway and watched it quite a few times.
As for accuracy... I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings trilogy also and watched it many times without any concerns about historical accuracy in either instance.
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

I have watched several documentaries of the battle of midway.  read some different accounts of it.  I personally think this is the best documentary on it.  there's 2 episodes from the japanese perspective and 1 from the american perspective.

also watched the history chanel documentary on it but found it lacking.

The few videos Montemayor has done have been quite enjoyable.  Hopefully he's just on a temporary hiatus, as I'd like to see him do more videos on Pacific Battles.  :aok

I've fallen asleep to this a few times, been a few years since I've "watched" it :)

Movies in the similar vein of 1917 and Dunkirk are more my jam, would like to see more movies like that. Saw this movie called "Lancaster Skies" on Amazon Prime, might check it out later. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3486080/ - doesn't look well received though.

Any other recommendations?
