I'm enjoying my new friends and allies in Aces High, and I'm even landing a few bombing missions along and along. Yesterday this happened.
I landed a bombing mission. The radio buffer announced it to the world. I felt like Orville Wright. Then I see someone ask for troops at a particular field. I'm not much, but I can fly a gooney bird. It's the most forgiving aircraft out there. So I announce I'll bring the troops. "I'm going to get to help the gang!" But, about the time I cleared the trees, "***somebodyelse*** has troops, decoy, can you launch a fighter?" So I did a quick rtb and launched a fighter. I didn't ask what kind, I just flew the one I'm best in, an F4F. Besides, I really like that a/c. I'm on my way figuring I'm going to do some good and I see, 'decoy, can you take out the ack in the city?'
Hmm. I don't have clue one about how to do that, but obviously it's going to involve strafing ground target. I said I'd give it a shot. Did I mention that it was dark? I made two low passes over the city and didn't draw any fire, but I drew some from the airfield, so I went over there. I got one ack before I made an UFIT, as my instructor would say, an Uncontrolled Flight Into Terrain.
I appreciate being included and I love being involved, but keep in mind, my skillset is very limited. Even in easy flight sims, my strafing skills really suck.
My daddy and I used to quail hunt a LOT back in the day. He had some good dogs and some sorry dogs, but he had this one dog that was about as bad as anything I ever saw him put up with, in the way of a bird dog. One afternoon, Jody was being especially bothersome, not staying on task, loping around with a stupid look on his face and flushing birds our other dogs would have found and pointed. I asked daddy why he didn't get rid of Jody. "Son, I knew that dog wasn't worth a damn when I brought him along, but the dog is having fun. Leave it at that."
Gentlemen, I am that dog.
