As far as the VR experience yeah AH had nailed it. Being able to use the hat switches to look around is a real neck saver. Most of us are older guys so that's a big deal. In my late 50s I don't need my virtual reality experience becoming an actual reality with a neck injury! Wish there was a way to adjust the tracking like TIR. THAT would be perfect.
I dabble in IL2 too. No hat switches with VR in that game. However, there is a popular app developed by a player there that works with steamvr called necksafer that allows you to use them. It works for DCS also. An experimental version is closer to TIR style of movement. Only problem is it only works in the yaw plane. A limitation of steamvr. No pitch. Even so, I find that to be a game changer insofar as my VR experience there. Before that it was just about impossible or at least kinda painful to just check your 6 let alone track in a fight. The TIR crowd had a clear advantage that's largely been taken away. I tried using the app with AH in steam. The rotation worked perfectly but the head position was jacked up way high. Couldn't adjust it. If that could work in AH you guys in VR would be blown away.
It IS much harder spotting other planes in IL2. Without icons it's weird. The plane shapes tend to disappear at medium range, you'll lose them looking right at them. Have to actually identify the plane. It's axis vs allies all the time there. My first "kill" in online play there was a friendly! He'd passed under me and shot the mustang to my left. I thought it must have been a 109 or 190, killed him. It was another Pony! Drano has incurred a penalty for shooting at a friendly! Lol. Switched to LW in a Dora (I know!) and first real kill sadly, was a 38(I know!) . No mistaking that shape! If you could see at the res needed at all ranges it'd be great.
No in game vox either. No way to send even a check 6. You can use Discord or TeamSpeak but that doesn't help the players not tuned. Nothing like a range channel. There's a third party radio app called SRS that's made for IL2 and DCS. That's actually integrated into some of the servers in IL2 and works great if you're tuned to it. Combat box has AI voices that talk back to you. Ground control, assigns you a call sign, vector to the action, etc. Pretty cool. But still - - everybody doesn't use it so comms are a bit lacking if you're not part of a group. Big hole in the experience IMO.
I must say tho that game is heavily supported. Updates tend to be huge with fixes and additions, think the last one had 80 items and another one due before Christmas. Last one added gorgeous totally re-done clouds, a couple of tanks and a plane. It looks great and has a lot of different things going on down on the ground. Trains and truck convoys to shoot at - - that shoot back too! It's getting there and come a long way from when I played the demo a zillion years ago.
