P-39D "Evelyn" 350th FG
« on: December 28, 2021, 05:07:21 PM »
This is an adoption of Fencer's original skin.

P-39L(all models except the N, P, and Q go on the P-39D) operated by the 346th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group, from its base in Rerhaia, Algeria during the summer of 1943. The white "V" on the door is this aircraft's individual letter in the 346th FS, the "X-R" on the engine hatch shows that this plane was previously used by the 81st FG. Aircraft names on the gun hatch were also commonly seen on 81st FG planes.

There is much debate about this plane's color scheme (and other P-39's in North Africa at this time) It's clearly a two-tone scheme very similar in style to the RAF pattern, but the RAF ordered no P-39's after the initial batch of P-400's (Airacobra Mk.I). While the 81st and 350th FG's both deployed to North Africa with a mix of P-400's, P-39D's and P-39L's , the serial number painted on the tail makes it clear that this aircraft was built as an L model for the USAAF. The high contrast between the upper camo shades certainly seems close to the RAF Tropical scheme of Dark Earth and Middlestone. To me, the plausibility that this plane was given a desert paint scheme using RAF is at least as plausible as the common alternatives of U.S. Sand over OD green or a factory applied scheme meeting the RAF Temperate scheme as seen on P-400's. In keeping with Fencer's original work, I decided to retain the Tropical scheme in RAF colors.

Oh, that's sharp!   The cannon barrel in the first shot looks like steel perfectly.

I wish I could take credit, but it's part of the funky hard coded specular effects of the P-39D model. Not sure why it's not the same on the Q, when all the other quirks carry over between the two.

Wish the MG barrels were the same.  And what is with the 2nd shot?  The barrel looks "dated" like the MG barrels do in all shots.  :headscratch:

It's the 20mm barrel in the second shot. My film with the 37mm did not give good lighting for a shot from that angle. Only the 37mm barrel looks chrome. I don't like the chrome look in general, although I did make one on purpose with the sand colored P-39Q. It was clearly polished metal in the reference photo. In this case however, I would prefer it to look like the others.

Ah.  Honestly though, the barrels look dated in general.  Would be nice if they got a "face lift".  :)

Regardless, I'm digging the Yellow Strip on the tail.  :x

Great looking skin Devil. I found the photo of this aircraft on the web and think your and Fencer's colour interpretation does seem most likely.
