VR Headset recomendations
« on: February 05, 2022, 11:11:53 PM »
Been playing AH enough that I would like to try the VR thing.

I know nothing about them.

Is the Oculus Quest 2 good? Any drawbacks?  How much of a difference do these make while playing? I imagine having fluid views is vey much an advantage.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My son got me a Quest2 for Christmas.

It's pretty neat, how it changes your view ingame, makes it seem more real in some ways.  Still struggling with getting commands and VoiceAttack just the way I want, so I've been mainly flying the "old" way, just to get muscle memory for the controls back.

Having said that............for my old eyes, it's too grainy, I have a harder time with the reduced resolution and detail.  That's just me.........several players love their Quest2.

If I am gonna go with VR full time, it will have to be with the Pimax 8K, or just wait and while and see what else comes down the tracks in the world of VR.

Being able to track targets just by turning your head is a plus, BUT, like I said, for me, getting everything set up just right is key.  Not there yet, but I work on it a little every day,
then take it off and play the old school way.

That's really good information! Thank you.

One of the things I was wondering about is the resolution. And what is voice attack?

Do you still use your normal controls for everything? Or is everything virtual

Voice Attack is a program that converts your spoken/verbal commands into ingame commands.  For example, instead of having a button on your controller programmed to raise/lower your gear, you just say "Gear" and VoiceAttack does the key input "G" for you, and your gear activate.

I still use my Thrustmaster TM16000 HOTAS and CH Pro Pedals, yes.

The resolution.....everyone refers to it as like looking thru a screendoor or something like that.  It's almost like watching one of the WW2 guncam films, or the combat films...grainy in a way, adds to the realism, but I want or need better resolution.

Check the VR section of the BBS, there are tons of threads about the different VR setups and the pros and cons of each.

Ive been using the quest 2 for awhile, had the old rift system before that.

Quest 2 works great, resolution doesnt seem to be much of an issue as the 3D just blows everything else out of the water!

You can use either the quest 2 controllers or the standard stick/throttle/pedals setup. I think there is a bit of lag with the quest 2 controllers and so prefer the standard controllers. (Warthog, CH throttle, CH pedals)

Check out the VR section of the boards for tips.

Voice Attack is a 10$ program that allows you to use voice commands to do many things in the game. Say "bombsite" and you can set it up to switch you to the bombsite with out hitting any buttons. Im up to 16 commands at this point and have a few ideas on other commands. My favorite is to say "icon" and the program hits  ALT I enough to get to "friendly icons, pauses for a second then returns to "normal icons". Great for seeing what your fellows are flying around you.

Check out the VR forum for great info

Vive pro with sony lenses mod since 2018

It changes the game for the better in all ways IMO

Issue is prices right now on decent video cards as they are criminally high

If you can't afford vr I suggest trackir for the next closest thing

The nice thing about the Quest is you can use it PC VR games as well for standalone (no PC required) gaming, videos and other stuff. You can also set it up fully wireless with a PC - so the PC sends the game video to the Quest with no wires required.

I answered you pm!

:)

I spoke in game last night about VR and other people mentioned the same thing regarding using the real stick, rudders, etc. The first thing I pictured is that using the Oculus controls would get tiring.

I'm still VR curious, but I still use trackIR.

Have anyone used HP Reverb G2 in AH or elsewhere?
