Fw 190D-9 flown by Klaus Faber of Jagdverband 44 at . While Jv 44 was an Me 262 squadron, it utilized four Fw 190D-9's for airfield defense while the jets were taking off or landing, as the jets were extremely vulnerable during these phases. Faber would down at least one P-47 in early May 1945 flying such a mission in this plane. The Jv 44 Doras had their undersides painted red with white stripes to prevent being shot at by the inexperienced gun crews at the airfield - one gun battery was crewed by a troop of Girl Scouts!
Other unit markings include a yellow capped spinner and an emblem painted on the port side fuselage of a red ring surrounding a black and white checkerboard representing the red bellied fighters circling the flag of the Jv 44's headquarters. All Jv 44 Doras had their side numbers painted red with white outlines. Their pilots all painted tongue-in-cheek slogans on the left side. Faber's reads, "Rein Muss er, und wenn wir beide weinen!" (He must go in, even if we both cry!)
