Nah, they needed to make sure the P&W Double Wasp didn't saw the carrier deck in two.

I like the 1D for dive bombing.  Lowering the gear makes excellent dive brakes, just have to remember to retract them after the drop.

Dive brakes not required that thing is controllable at high speed!

I've never used the gear while dive bombing, I always setup so can carry as much speed as possible on the egress.

I think you misunderstood me. I said it's because we're giving everyone that's not in a hog the middle finger.

Very true the hog is very controllable in both pitch, and roll at high speed.

I've never used the gear while dive bombing, I always setup so can carry as much speed as possible on the egress.

I rarely use the gear for anything other than landing, but they do work effectively as a dive brake if needed.
