Off topic a bit but I went to a Metallica stadium show last summer and it was the best sounding outdoor concert I’ve ever heard. (Highland Stadium/Bills) It was so crisp and clean and you could hear and feel each instrument. Plus coupled with the lights and pyros it just worked. They have some pro shot clips on their you tube page.

Was my sixth Metallica show but I’ve been to 100s of concerts. I worked for Budweiser in the 90’s while in college and my job was to go to concerts/bars and buy people beer so they would buy more Budweiser. Spent more than I ever made lol.

I've known that crew for decades, even though it changes up a little each tour, depending on who is available at the time. They were using DB Sound back in the day.  We also handled Guns-n-Rose, ACDC, Kiss, The Stones, and a lot of other top billing artist. They are defuncted now. I can find out which gear their using, could be Clair Bros. I'm friends with almost all those crews.

Nobody owns their gear, it's all leased from companies I may be working for.. The only thing the band owns is their instruments.

The speaker cabinets have seriously made a transition to digital and greatness since the 90s. Every speaker is networked and we  know all we need to know what the cabinets are doing while it's in the air and running. L-Acustics are rated top of the line right now. In the day during the Animals tour Pink Floyd brought out a system called Flaslight,.... stunning sounding system for outside stadiums.

Outdoors is much easier then indoors as we don't have any wall and ceiling restrictions for bouncing sound, we just uncork the bottle and let it rip outside.

Lots of war stories from those days. Now I do corporate/industrial, occasional movie or TV show,.. the're more money in that, because no one who does concerts wants to do that stuff,... so they choke us with money benefits.to drag us over. I still do concerts, just not as much anymore,.. and I'm ok with that. I was at my peak when those concerts were at their peak and just brilliant talent. Not fond of new music to be mixing.....it's just a flat line mix.

The last show I paid to see as audience was 1980, Robin Trower, $6. 2 years later I was mixing him. My very first show was 81, Rick Darringers w/ Gary Moore (from Thin Lizzy) as second gtr... was scare out of my pants. lol all went well, and that launched me into decades of the same.

As one can tell, after dealing with artist egos and audiences and too many people around us way too much,.. we tend to become a bit jaded and callus. We don't mean to be,.. it just ends up going with the territory when you've done it too long. <shrug>

I read somewhere that the stadium upgraded their sound system in some way prior to that show from John Mayer’s company. Apparently Metallica was the first ones to use it.

I was all over the NE during that time so we probably were at the same shows. Had a guy who was working for me last year that was on the stage building crews for that time period, showed me pics from all those bands that were pretty cool. The Monster of Rock days!  :rock

Thank you for making this, Animal, I enjoyed watching.  Exciting music, plenty of external shots - reminds me of some of the ones Niro and LePape made back in the day?   Agree with Dad its your best version yet.

I especially thought the large B-24 formations were impressive, and this is something that sets Aces High apart from DCS and IL-2 Great Battles - being able to fly a heavy bomber into battle.   I really like the shots with views out of the cockpit, looking at the other planes in formation, and external views of wingmen flying together.  To me it shows AH players are teams working together -  not just flying around everyman for himself.   Good too, that it combines soundtrack music WITH engine sounds.

I hope you keep making films.  And if you need some other pilots' help as extras in filming, I'd be happy to help out.  I always thought there should be a dedicated film group in Aces High - seems like they have always been mostly single-player efforts.

I polished up the music a bit, that's not how the original files sounded. I widened the stereo image with an exciter, a scratch of reverb, and returned some dynamics to it. What you may notice,.. since L and R are wider,.. you'll occasionally hear the plane sound pile right down the middle, which opens it up to hear it without turning it up.

My guess, Metalica used the house system as reinforcement, combined with their own, could be wrong, just guessing,... usually the way it works, as long as the house system is up to par.

Went back to see if I could find what I was talking about. They partner with Meyer sound, 40 years now, not John Mayer and It’s highmark stadium I spelled it wrong. Sounded pretty dope anyway!

Obviously I’m a fan!

Film pulled me in a few times.  Was cool to see a film like this.  Really liked how many aspects (audio, editing, storytelling) improved throughout the releases.  Looking forward to watching your next one.

Hmm.. I know some of the crew from the 90s , thought it was DB,, the rest I know is correct,.. at one point or another.... but,... Meyer has great well known systems. I've used their gear a lot over the years  I think they are better now then DB, a cleaner sound, very heavy cabinets, I always called them concrete boxes lol. might as well be.
Maryland Sound does a lot too. They do a lot of the DC celebrations. All great stuff  Meye is top shelf.

It is cool. But I found that a lot of their videos as very staged productions. They do have the damage model going on. Their AC look like plastic. Burnt out on 1 single water explosions tho, that water hangs in the air way too long. Love their damage model tho.. A little blurry,....2+k views in 13 yrs is not a great count. According to charts I saw their numbers have been dropping too.
