Successful anti sky banding test.
« on: June 22, 2023, 06:44:51 PM »
Before I was out to show what can be created with the cheapest and simplest setup.

Since my prior videos I changed out Microsoft Movie Maker for Vegas Pro, turning it up a notch.

I've had great success eliminating sky banding. Here is a test video. I used very little Motion Blur (Super sampling 4, motion blur 1). I'm not looking for MB effects in this video as much as sky banding.

Using Bandicam to screen capture AH Viewer and then processing in Vegas Pro, I found using the below combo settings to be very good so far.

This has almost eliminated sky banding all the way from Bandicam capture, through Vegas rendered end-product, to YouTube.

This is what I found SO FAR, that works best on my computer. Some may have found even cleaner, which I am certainly open to.

* AH Film Viewer - Playback Speed: 0.40x

* Bandicam - Lagarith Lossless Codec in Bandicam at 60 fps.
Download and Install - https://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
Bandicam > Video > Settings > External Codec > Lagarith Lossless Video Codec > FPS 60

* Vegas Pro Project settings:
Template: Custom (2560x1440, 60.000 fps)
Pixel format: 32-bit floating point (video levels)
Full-resolution rendering quality: Best
De-interlace Method: None

Video file playback rate (speed): 1.400

Vegas Pro - Render: MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4  > Template: Internet HD 1080p, 59.94 (fps)
Resolution I used

I have not tested the NVida NVENC templates, even tho I am running Nvida GPU

Um, what is "sky banding"?

It's when a gradient , like the sky as it fades from lither to darker, (Horizon to deep sky)... instead of a nice smooth gradient it ends up with bands of color. instead.

The banding usually occurs in 8-bit, (or converting a high bit to a lower 8-bit) which is what a lot of people use and usually a default. Many don't use 32-bit because it takes more resources and drive space. I always use at least 24-bit for any graphics. But using 32-bit for vids now, as YT will crumble some of it down.

Good example https://indietips.com/fix-colour-banding/

If you look at my other videos, mainly Combat Challenge. in some scenes you'll see the sky banding. Which really PMO.

An 8-bit image can contain up to 28, or 256, different shades of colors. This is the most common color depth for images on the web and for digital photos.

16-bit color, also called High color, computers and monitors can display as many as 65,536 colors, which is adequate for most uses. However, graphic intensive video games and higher resolution video can benefit from and take advantage of the higher color depths.

24-bit color, also called True color, computers and monitors can display as many as *16,777,215 different color combinations^.

32-bit color supports *16,777,215 colors* but has an alpha channel it can create more convincing gradients, shadows, and transparencies. With the alpha channel 32-bit color supports 4,294,967,296 color combinations.

Ok, I've never heard that term before and your first post offered no context clues.

My apologies, I recklessly assumed it was common knowledge, my bad.
