P-47D-11 possible adoption
« on: June 27, 2023, 09:15:59 AM »
I'm thinking of adopting this skin, but I can find no pics of it except a closeup of the cockpit with the aircraft name underneath.  While the 353rd decorated their aircraft with black and yellow diamond checkered cowls, the size of the pattern varied quite a bit.  SO I can only guess at the size of the diamonds.

I have much more info on Glenn Duncan's "Dove of Peace", from the same squadron.   Would anybody mind if I replaced "The New Yorker" with "Dove of Peace"?  Or should I skip the adoption and just submit Duncan's aircraft as a new skin?

Interesting that Duncan's aircraft didn't even have the diamond pattern, but a checkerboard pattern.

I'm going to cast a vote for keeping it as "The New Yorker"

Greebo has a stunning D-11 from the same squadron with the diamond pattern - only with the fuselage in OD green over gray. I like having the congruity of keeping the unit marking as similar as possible so that it's obvious they are stable mates.

Also, I just think the scheme looks cooler with the diamonds and the stripes on the fuselage and tail.

Here's a cool variation in the diamond pattern where the black wraps around the front of the cowl.

I have the book "Sly Birds" Its not much help sadly I looked way back to find images of "The New Yorker" to no avail. The cover has a colour photo of the "Dove of Peace" It would useful as a reference for the original skin and some others inside.

Only other bare metal Razor back in the book with a clear and full image was this plane LH-V. It is a squadron sister ship different pattern to "Dove of Peace" though.
Of all the bare metal jugs in the book none have the horizontal black stripe on the tail.

Another sister aircraft with the other pattern in colour.

Fantastic stuff, lyric, thank you!

So if New Yorker is redone, it should be without black ID stripes on tail and stabs.   And the size of and position of diamond pattern would just be a best-guess.

Still curious why Duncan's plane has a yellow and black checkerboard rather than the diamond pattern.  I read an interesting tidbit about him and his plane.  He liked the emblem with the six-gun toting skeleton riding on a saddle-equipped flying machine gun and planned to call his aircraft "Winged Death" but his superiors wouldn't allow it.   So he sarcastically named the plane "Dove of Peace" and added the dove graphic, but still used the skeleton emblem on the cowl.
