Graphics card upgrade

I'm very far out of the loop when it comes to graphic cards these days. I pretty much stopped keeping up on them when the price went through the roof when the "miners" took over. However, its been a while and I think its time I upgrade my card. I get some stuttering/freeze frames in groups with my VR.

Im running a EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 w/6GB ram. I have just begun to research cards and any help would be great. Im hoping to keep the price in the $350-$450 range.

A 4060 Ti is around $400 I think.  That should be a nice upgrade from the 1060.  Or a 6750XT if your willing to go AMD over nVidia.  Make sure you have a big enough power supply though.

Although benchmarks are affected by multiple things, I've learned to rely on https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html when it comes to upgrading a video card. The rule of thumb I learned decades ago was to double the performance to see any significant difference. Thus, seeing that the 1060 gets a tad over 10000 points, looking at the cards at the 20k range should give you some hints. Note that there's a lot of non-gaming cards listed so just look at the GeForce or Radeon cards - well, it looks like most of those already are gaming cards instead of CAD ones. RTX 4060 is the first to double your score and it seems to fit your budget. RTX 3060 followed by 2080Ti, 3070, 4060Ti... You get the picture.

Haven't paid much attention to the numbering of Radeon cards lately, but the Nvidia cards still seem to follow the pattern: ##60 is the first "serious" gaming card, the first two digits tell the generation. "Ti" means a selected overclocked version, falling between the "tens". And the ##60 of the newer generation is close to the ##70 of the previous one.

I had a GeForce 2080 Super for the longest. Just installed a Gigabyte Aorus Elite 4070ti. Makes no difference in lower quality graphics like AH, but in MSFS it does allow everything at Ultra settings.

Be sure to investigate the 4060s as some are getting rough reviews.

Why do they have to change stuff so much!!!!

HDMI is out and DP plugs are in. The monitors I use dont even HAVE DP jacks!!!

At this point Im leaning towards the Nvidia card. Less power draw, even though I have a 550 watt supply. My mother board is old (P8Z77-V) but from what I can find it should run a 4060 ti ok.

Got to look into cables next to figure out what connects to what and what adaptors I need if any for the monitors I have and the Quest II.

If you update the gpu update the cpu. I got a used 2080 ti (which beats out a beats out the 3070 card and 5 frames from a 3080) and a x5800 CPU for 450 in January. Cards sit in a glass box and only go bad overheated, most people take care of these cards as they were alot of money brand new. 300 for GPU and 150 CPU. It has been nothing short of awesome.

Rtx 3060ti is probably at like 300(200-250 used) these days and is a good card. It seems the 4060/4060ti barely offer any improvement as far as I’ve read.

AMD cards seem to have great bang for your buck especially if you don’t care about games with ray tracing.

I'm looking to smooth out my VR. I have some stutters and mini freezes when playing AH in busy areas. I haven't tried many other games because I don't have much to push the video.

The 1070 with i7 in vr had studders around a busy base..

The i9 and 2070 cleared that up

The 3070ti and i7 I run now made no noticeable improvement in AH

Yup AH does not need all that much. VR does add some to the top though. I just might have a card coming available in a few days......

Your the reason I started looking in to all this crap! We were on "buzzsaw" and everytime I ran into you it would start out as a fun fight and then Id get a few stutters and lose you and the next thing I know BANG! in the tower!  LOL!!!

Not claiming to be an expert on hardware, although I have "built" 2 PCs, most recently in 2021.  However FWIW, (1) I wouldn't buy a used graphics card, as you never know if it was used for mining, and (2) 550W power supply isn't much any more.  I assume you can use something like pcpartpicker site to evaluate total power load with your proposed 4060Ti, these being listed as using about 160W.

OK, so I got my new 4060 ti in, some new cables and Im about ready to do the swap.

Is it still recommended to use CCleaner to wipe the drivers, shut down the machine, install the new card and then install the drivers from the site?
