B-24 Fuel tanks (and others)
« on: August 22, 2023, 09:27:41 AM »
I was shooting offline, as you do with a broken hat-switch, and I noticed the B-24 seems to have a top fuel tank, right in the centre of the wings. I quickly looked online and it isn't clear. Mostly I see life dinghies housed there.  :headscratch:

Also the B-29 seems to have fuel tanks in the nacelles of №1 & 4, but they're harder to ignite  Similarly the B-17 seems much harder in general than the B-24 to set ablaze. Better protected tanks? Rubberised? Inert gas-filling?

Really? On the whole AH forum no US bomber n̶e̶r̶d̶s̶ experts who can describe the fuel systems off the top of their heads? Is it still classified?  :)

Most experts are long gone or don't check the boards daily anymore. "The whole AH forum" has shrunken even more than the game.  :old:

For starters, B-29 fuel system here:  https://www.facebook.com/B29B24Squadron/posts/official-usaf-instructional-chart-of-b-29-fuel-systemhow-much-fuel-does-a-b-29-c/1056080591248501/

B-24 here:  https://449th.com/b-24-aircraft/

I would post photos, but I still haven't figured out how to do that since Photobucket started to charge for it.

I'm fairly certain that all of our fuel tanks were self-sealing by this point of the war.  Looks to me like any hit in either wing of either plane would test how well those worked.

I use https://postimages.org/ Just like PhotoBucket in the old days. Free account, click upload, click the "link" for the picture and post it. Easy Peazy.

Thanks Oldman and Fugitive for contributing. Wow the whole high-wing of the B-24 essentially fuel.

Yeah it seems so. Not even so much interest in aircraft or ACM at all. If I'd have entitled this thread: "Klaus Schwab denies a difference in AH fuel-protection systems in order to oppress the peasants, take away meat and stop people driving IC-engined cars" we'd have had 380 views and 6-pages of 'contributions' before the lock  :rofl
