Heavenly Lambchop
« on: September 18, 2023, 03:49:06 AM »
Thank you to Vraciu who suggested I skin this aircraft and who found me the info for it.

"Heavenly Lambchop" was a PB4Y flown by the US Navy's Fleet Photographic Squadron 5 based on the Pacific island of Guam in 1945. On January 15th it formed part of a flight of three PB4Ys who were tasked with photographing the Japanese naval base at Truk lagoon. On route one of their escorting P-38s flown by Lt. Joseph Devona lost an engine and "Heavenly Lambchop" was ordered to detach and escort it back to base. Shortly after this the P-38 lost its other engine so the pilot bailed out over the ocean. After locating his life raft the PB4Y circled him for six hours until a US destroyer arrived to pick him up. They eventually landed back at Guam after a flight of thirteen and a half hours.

Absolutely magnificent.

We'll have to fly it in formation with"Little Red Head II" to recreate that mission.

Nice!
Back in 2022 after a loooooong break from 2010. Old name Ratpack, same for the BBS.

Squad I did the most tours with were the Excaliburs then The 172nd Rabid Dogs. Still trying to talk Illigaf, Coola, Oldman22, and Joecrow into coming back instead of being boring old farts!

Spectacular!

Kudos to her crew for circling a downed pilot for 6 hours to ensure his recovery.  That's devotion and comradeship, and putting inter-service rivalries aside.

The Lib sure looks good in two-tone blue.
