My NYE Musical Message
« on: December 29, 2023, 09:53:14 AM »
I’m old skewl early 70s left-over hippie at heart - about peace, love, expelling vexations,…and something about tomatoes. Helplessly hoping. <shrug>

(Unsolicited Side Note: 2nd high profile band I ever worked with on sound crew
1981, Venue: Pointe East, Lynwood, IL, Everyday of my career was luck, I’m just Opie from Mayberry.)

I like stuff from all eras, but I'm not really into "classic" rock"

There's great stuff from the 70s.

Stuff I do like - and not everything they did, but in general -

Neil Young, CCR, The Cars, David Bowie, Heart (70s stuff - not the 80s crap), Led Zep, early Rod Stuart, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac, Paul McCartney/Wings, Kinks, Pink Flloyd,

Stuff I can't stand (usually)

Bruce Springsteen, any southern rock band, Eric Clapton ( do like maybe 1 of his), Chicago, The Carpenters, and probably tons more.

Icecreamonmars.com. ICOM for short.

If it weren’t for my job, I’d prolly still be stuck in a razor slice of old skewl rock. Because if I just worked rock I’d failed financially. Not by choice, I’ve done everything thrown at me, I got tastes of all genres to make a living. Even music from China, UK, Cuba, Japan to even natives of the jungles of Africa. Top thing I learned, no matter where its from, no matter the genre, they all sing about the same things,…Love, Hurt, Hope, Despair, Happiness, and feeling lost.  It has a worldly effect.

If its done well, I’ll listen. If its done with a lot of thought, I’ll love it. Pink Floyd is one of the best examples of immersion, yet J. Geils Band from the 70s controls a crowd like nothing I’ve seen since. I’m selective, hard to impress, yet have a wide spectrum.

All days gone by and memories now, as I prepare to retire. It was a mostly s great 45 yr run, but certainly not all its cracked up to be. I’ll be fine without it. 4k concerts is borderline too much. I don’t even own a stereo, rarely listen to music in the car,…just burnt toast. Lucky I can still hear at all. Lol <sigh>

I just want to sit in a bar and have cocktails with normal Joe.

Its a big world out there, step outside the box.

I noticed one of my “guess who” albums has “hay is cool” written on the wall of a structure behind them.
Had to change it to “hay” because forum software.

I don’t think it was on the other copy I have.

Anyone know the story?

Never noticed. It could have to do with Burton Cummings, singer, and rejected by Randy Bachman, gtr. I know they had a falling out. Hence BTO. That word was used in different ways back then, happy. Cummings hurt himself, back then the act of todays meaning, it was less acceptable and brought negative light to the band and members. As soon as he came out, the original band was over.  Bachman will put it into “ just wanted to do my own thing” blanket cover, SOP. But I think that issue played a major role. Bachman probably didn’t catch the play on words, what it really meant, until after release. I’m just going on fading memories. Not my circus, not my monkey, just pay me my money. It may have been removed after the fact.

You may get a more accurate story on google. Or s press release pr version.

If its not on other copies then that is a collectors item, more so if still in its package. Same with flames on Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors album. You got an early copy.

I did a one-off show with his sons, Nelson twins. To be honest, like many, I don’t remember a damn thing about that show. Many times I just went through the motions, produce quality monitors for whoever, collected pay, and went home, rinse and repeat.

It may be interesting to those outside the biz, to us its just another show with another artist. It just becomes a blur. I didn’t talk up to artist, they either talked on equal level because WE are doing our part to do a show together, or they talked up to me to save their butts. I think AF sought and hired me because I knew how to say the word “no”, when everyone else was a “yes” person. I wasn't even interested in the gig, for her comeback tour, she choked me with money, so I went. I turned down others because either they were going to countries I oreferred not to go to, or they were sending crew home getting sick from being over-worked. Prince, MC Hammer, Allman Bros.

After 30 yrs I was just burned out and lost interest. I’m very far from star-struck and I’m not kissing any butts. So I joined IATSE and did corporate events. It actually pays much more. They pay me $10 more per hr to not do concerts, and no carnie life and dealing with inflated egos. Whatever you read about AF, is true, a true PITA.

For those newbies wanting in, my first advice, do something else, have a plan B. its horrible for family life and relationships. The glory isn’t worth the sacrifice. Pick your poison wisely. The pessure on s monitor engineer is not for weak stomachs. Ugh!
It makes ya mean, i don’t want to be that guy. Good riddance.

I’m ok if I never see another concert. I’m just cooked. But I still love great music.
