Kittyhawk Mk 1 (Export P-40E for the RAF) flown by Clive "Killer" Caldwell of No. 112 Squadron, RAF in Early 1942. Caldwell was transferred to command the Shark Squadron in January 1942 after serving in No. 250 Squadron, becoming the first Australian to lead an RAF squadron. He would lead until the autumn of 1942 when he was recalled to Australia to lead the RAAF's No. 1 Fighter Wing. Bu that point he had 22 confirmed victories, making him the top scoring pilot in P-40's.
Caldwell's plane was painted with RAF paints in the desert scheme of Dark Earth and Middle Stone over Azure blue. These paints were field applied over the factory scheme, leaving the green paint around the serial number visible. The marking include the 1940-42 RAF roundels, white ID letters, and red spinner used by the Desert Air Force as IFF with the iconic shark mouth on the nose. A squadron leader flag was painted under the forward canopy.
