How are things these days
« on: February 17, 2024, 11:55:57 AM »
After watching the last few episodes of Masters of The Air I'm really starting to miss this game. Its probably been at least 10 or so years since I strapped in to the Pony. That is about the time I switched to a Mac. I'm thinking about dropping some cash on a mid level gaming laptop and digging out my X52.

What are numbers like these days? If I'm going to drop 1500 on a laptop I at least want to know I'll be able to find a fight. Its been years since I paid attention to PC specs. What do I need to have an enjoyable experience? As of right now not looking to VR but I may down the road. I just want to run the game a decent frame rate and possibly play Hell Let Loose on  a different rig other than my PS5

Thanks in advance!!!

Player numbers are down from 10 years ago, but we still easily have 100+ in the MA nightly during U.S. primetime.

I think in 2016, Aces High III came out, which required a much stronger graphics card but allowed much improved graphics over AH II.    I'd look for a laptop with a 4060 GPU at minimum, or 3060 Ti if you can find one, esp. if VR is a possibilty (it should be - Aces High has a very good VR implementation and VR changes the game experience like nothing, even TrackIR, ever has).

There are a few new models of aircraft since 10 years ago (Yak-3, Me 410?) but many of the older models have had upgrades to improve their 3D shapes and detail (no more octagonal engine cowls) and each aircraft now has up to 64 different skins.   Many ground vehicles if that is your thing.

And there about 20 different rotating MA terrains, one of which depicts the entire ETO and Mediterranean area, and another centered on the Black Sea and Eastern Med.   Very cool now to fly over realistic land masses.

The Dickweed Heavy Bomber Group is still active and recreates massive B-17 raids against some poor country weekly.

Currently there is a Masters of the Air-based scenario running on Saturdays for a few more weeks, the bomber formations exceed 70 B-17s, with escorting P-47s and P-51s battling Me109s and FW190s in the thin air at 25,000 ft.

Still a very fun game, has everything you remember and more!

Sorry I'm way out of the loop when it comes to PC specs. I really don't want to build a desktop. If possible I'd like to run off an laptop. I assume this would be enough horsepower??

You will still run into the same cheesy gameplay from time to time (HOing, ramming, running, hording, guys sitting in 88s and 5" shooting at fighters dogfighting), but the game is still fun.  Sometimes you might have to switch sides to get into the biggest fights.  A lot of the guys still here have been here for a while and will likely stay for the duration of the game's lifespan.  With that being said, I still find great value in this game, and I will continue to fly until Dale shuts her down.

I would think that would be plenty enough.  mERv on the boards operates two laptops at once running two sets of bombers.

I hope you get set up and give the game a try again! Look forward to seeing you in the skies!  :salute

No new aircraft or vehicles had been added in the last 10 years. The last new ride, the Tu-2, celebrated its 10th birthday about three weeks ago (Jan 27th 2014).
The Yak-3 was added in July 2013, the Me 410 in August 2012.

It's still the best $15 you can spend for a month of 24/7 entertainment imo

This would run AH3 without a problem even in VR. I used a laptop with a 3060 for VR back in the day.

From the specs listed for Hell let loose, this should run it fine too.

Back in 2022 after a loooooong break from 2010. Old name Ratpack, same for the BBS.

Squad I did the most tours with were the Excaliburs then The 172nd Rabid Dogs. Still trying to talk Illigaf, Coola, Oldman22, and Joecrow into coming back instead of being boring old farts!
