As far as the stolen valor charge goes:

How many iterations of "Tigers," "Cougars" or any other variant of big game cat names and logos permeate the sports world? Plenty is the answer. I played all the aforementioned sims and there were plenty of JG-XX's, Gunfighters, VF-XX's and all other cool names for squads all over the mmo landscape and most weren't related to each other in any way. They're just cool names to take when you're forming a squad. "Damned" is a cool name. I think George (Pterodactyl) Walsh originally chose Damned because his dad had something to do with VF-81 in real life back in the day. It's a really cool name and I'm glad Ptero chose it. I enjoy the legacy he and his Damned formed over the years and I'm proud I got to be a tiny, tiny piece of it.
I have no issue with there being another Damned out there, they have their legacy and we have ours. Do fans of the Clemson Tigers, Princeton Tigers or LSU Tigers get their teams, players and legacies mixed up? Nope. Are they able to cohabitate in the scene? Yup.
Stolen valor isn't the case at all here, It's a cool name in a video game.

There was a “Flying Tigers AVG” in AW, another guy created “Flying Tigers 135th”, which I ended up as CO. As you stated, cool name, but we never squabbled as we differentiated intensionally to avoid it. AVG was a FR based squad, 135th was an RR based squad. AVG was kinda shrinking at the time.  I’m a one person squad as “Flying Tigers” since there are no others around.

This doesn’t affect me. But, conflicts should be expected.

Anyone who flew AW will view that Damned as original. I’m one of them only because AW is where I know the name from.

As you stated, its a game. I’m fixated on getting numbers up. The only thing I take seriously.

I distinctly remember getting a push and a shove because I was going to call my squad "The Legion of the Damned" (after my Warhammer 40k, look the original up, they were awesome).

One thing lead to another and I decided on Eismeer to avoid getting into conflict with the 88 Damned.

The notion of "Stolen Valor" I think is a bit much, not having enough respect or courtesy to rebrand would be a less absurd complaint

Had to go back and look for Musketeers squad page because I recalled their claim as “the oldest”, it would seem they may not have been, more on that below. Are any still flying as “Muskies”?

The only one I remember well is Rapier.

The only Muskie I've seen recently still flying under the squad tag is Mailman in IL2.

I'm pretty sure the original The Damned squadron was around before the Musketeers. From what I vaguely recall Rapier was the one that claimed it was the oldest.

As far as The Damned goes, yes it's bad form, but I don't think anyone really cares much about squadron names since they mean entirely nothing and are created and abandoned by individual players on a whim. Some create squad names just to taunt others like a signature tag.

Skyyr has no more right to the name than anyone else. Yes, he was a short-term member of _Damned_ in Fighter Ace, under the handle _Shadow_, but he was also kicked out (dishonourably, I might add) of the squad long before FA closed its doors.
