Am I too old to fly in AH!!!
« on: June 05, 2024, 11:40:47 AM »
Gentleman, I may be pushing 76 but aviation has always been my first love other than my beautiful Wife of 55 years come June 10th!!! I'm a real pilot with a couple thousand hours of real flight time not to mention several thousand hours of simulated flight hours in Fighter Ace & Aces High. Question,,,is there any room in AH for us old folks that still think of VR is some kind of venereal disease? ~S~

Aye! I'm one of those seniors, and my son is a junior.

I've noticed that as we get older our eyes aren't so good and VR has helped me a bunch in this regard. IF you're interested in VR I found a quest 2 on Amazon for $199. I've run AH3 on VR with a card as old as an R9 380 so if you're willing to sacrifice the detail you might could get by with an older card.

If there's anything I can do to help you get up and running I'd be glad to help.

Someone took a very unofficial poll not too long ago and determined the average player age is somewhere in the upper 50s so you’re good.

Not sure what your budget is but you can get it running for pretty cheap if you don't mind turning down the detail.

If you're not gonna run VR you can get this done pretty cheap.

This is a complete system for just over $300

For decent VR you can get it done for 1k even with a laptop.

For hotas I'd say winwing is the best, for bang for the buck I'd say VKB or you could always get something like this for pretty cheap:$189
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QWCC2YY/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_6?smid=A3IP6NZYGEKGSU&psc=1

I'm sure there are others who have better suggestions. This is just something I found in a quick search.

I have used these hotas and they are decent for the the current price, I've used the 1030 with a 3470 and it was playable.
I also bought a previous version of this laptop with a 3060 and was able to use it for VR.
Hope this is helpful.

To actually answer your question, jump right back in, it's as playable as you recall, and many do not use VR. The view system you remember from your prior time is the same; the game is very playable with a j/s and hatswitch, but may be more challenging, as it always was, to use keypad views.

My only suggestion might be to enlarge the FOV (field of vision) from the default 90 degrees to something that may give you a better overlap such as 100 or 105 degrees, the wider the FOV the more you'll notice fishbowl effects on the edges of your screen/vision.

Our mark II eyeballs have 120 degrees normal and an extra 10 or so peripheral, but monitors are the limiting factor here (that induced fishbowl effect.)

Aside from the hat/keypad FOV being adjusted, you may want to find better head positions than default, altho' default are very good still.

Having said that, some players think VR confers some slight advantages in certain situations like spotting GVs or tracking planes to better end up with a firing solution (seeing around those pesky canopy frames.)

Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.
I'm not perfect, but I am closer to it than you are.
