Bf 109G-2 flown by Franjo Džal, commander of 15.(Kroat)/JG 52, a squadron comprised of Croatian volunteer pilots and ground crew. Croatia was granted independent status from Yugoslavia by Nazi Germany following Germany's defeat of Royal Yugoslavia in April 1941. The squadron was attached to the Luftwaffe's JG 52 and carried German markings and the Crest of the Croatian Air Force Legion. Beginning in October 1941, it fought in southern Ukraine, Kuban, North Caucasia, and Crimea. By the time the squadron was withdrawn to Croatia in March 1944, it's pilots achieved 297 Soviet aircraft shot down; with 14 pilots being aces. Franjo Džal had 16 voctories to his credit. He was also shot down by Soviet ace Alexander Pokryshkin in July 1943, but survived. Franjo Džal survived the war, but not the civil post-war unrest in greater Yugoslavia. He was arrested by the Communist Yugoslavian government, tried for being a collaborator of the Nazi's and executed in September 1945.
