I go through my task manager often and noticed a lot of activity for the first 30 minutes of PC being on.

By the time I had looked up all suspicious executables and realized the activity was legit, they had already finished up.

Even if you turn automatic updates to manual, there are still some updatey activity going on under the hood.

One thing that happens in the background at startup, especially after updates, is System doing some maintenance on the hard disk. That's very annoying with HDDs since no-one seems to care any longer about optimizing the code as their own computers are from the upper shelf featuring lots of RAM, an i5 or i7 CPU and a modern SSD. Back in the day they used to have competitions about fitting the most demanding piece of program on a floppy disk. I remember a first person 3D "game" where you could run through endless cathedrals with pillars along the nave, each room having a different set of surface skins, everything being shiny and polished, shadows and light beams looking realistic etc. Just walking and viewing, nothing to loot or shoot. But it was on a 1.44 Mb floppy and ran on almost any computer!

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Agreed, most modern computers need little to no tweaking for resource gain, nor over-clocking. In the past days, the game/program were more demanding than most PCs could handle. They were more designed for office type situations.

But finding and disabling background processes that cause interruptions like freezes and discos will probably always be.

My preference I use Ccleaner (not a sales pitch), I think there are similar other apps, it cleans out all temp files, updates all my drivers, software and Windows updates. So I disable a lot of bkg services and processes. When I choose it updates everything at once.

To Permanently disable Windows Update
Keep in mind you will have to update your system manually and should do so every week.

1) Open Start Menu, type Services in the search bar, and open it.

2) Locate and pick the Windows Update option from the “Services” list, then click the Stop button.

3) Change the Startup Type to Disabled by clicking on the General tab.

Any time you do a windows update, the indexing service needs quite a bit of time of processor cycles to complete.

I disable Indexing Service on my end. I personally don't need it.

Did the same here. Windows search will work without it, only a bit slower. But Search is slow in any case and very rarely used anyway. Guess there's many who even don't know about it!

I'll bet many are spiffing up their machines in anticipation of playing by getting drivers and other things up to date.

I usually go through a few boot cycles and let it run for an hour after any updating and it's amazing how many things drop off your task manager list.

I think many are firing up the game/sim too soon while windows does it's housekeeping and getting a bad experience.

^^ tru dat. Although I tend to reboot before starting another game just to flush the memory. But that's way after Windows has done the housekeeping.
