Those pipe band snares sound amazing in person but I haven't seen it replicated in a recording as well.

Maybe the crack is "too fast" for either recording hardware or a speaker's ability to play it back.

I'm still trying to figure out how Jan Hammer got that first china crash in "star cycle" on tape.

Hmmm, never thought about it until now. That snap attack comes from high freqs. If a bright mic wasn’t used and no EQing its not going to bring that out.  Thats hitting the 4k-8k range. I’d use a bright condenser mic used for hi-hat or overhead for symbols like a 414 or 81 with low. end rolled off. Something like a 57 isn’t going to hit that mark as well. So my guess is mic selection. Shure 57s and 58s are always laying around, but those are more vocal or gtr mics, lotta ppl use 57s on snare, but rock snares not usually that tight or high. A shure 87 might work.

Wowsers!

Have you seen the Wipeout vide.

It's a rarity since the guitars are supporting the drummer instead of vice versa.

an older friend a big fan and has some neat stories about and how they inspired him and his friends in the UK

This video is not a live clip though. The audio is dubbed in. Opening snare/drums sounds like a more modern recording, then it's blended in to what sounds close to the record, but cleaned up and maybe mastered differently

Since it was 1966 you're probably correct.

Found this after a long time looking for it. Vid quality sux and the sound isn’t the best but first time I saw it like 10 years ago I couldn’t stop listening to it.

Every drummer in the 60s and 70s, including myself, played thus as some benchmark lol

My fav group, I have an almost complete collection on vinyl and the same for CD’s. I was lucky enough to see them live in IIRC 74/75 in Ottawa. Unfortunately Greg Lake had just left the band before I saw them so Whetton had taken over the vocals.

I even have a rare copies of Fripptronix which featured Brian Eno and Fripp and A child’s guide to King Crimson.
