Film Viewer Issues
« on: January 14, 2025, 07:51:43 PM »
OK, I have been doing a bunch of testing with the film viewer. Mine crashes often and has odd layering issues.....

The water will sometime look like ribbons and sometimes  the town or field tile will be standing on one of its edges.

Ive tried running in compatibility mode all the way back to XP. Ive tried different graphic setting and resolutions. Ive even loaded the game to an old laptop, clean and fresh, all default and still I get these errors. The film I grabbed the screen shot above from ALWAYS starts out with those textures and will always crash, but not at the same place.

I have installed AHII, and AHI and used those film viewers with the same issues.

Now, the only films I CAN run without issues are old ones. The newest I have is 2018 and those films seem to run fine. No graphic issues or crashes.

So my questions are Does anyone else NOT have these issues with the film viewer? Does anyone have films from 2019- present so I can test "when" the issues creep in.

At first I was thinking it was my computer. It is a bit old but it has some upgrades.

2012___i7-3770K @ 3.50GHZ (8cpus)____12 MB ram___GTX670
2018___   same CPU                         ____12 MB ram___GTX1060 6GB
2024___   same cpu                          ____24 MB ram___RTX 4060 Ti

But I have no trouble running the game either on the monitor or  on the Quest 2

Once I found the films that ran Im thinking something has changed in the software. Now is it something to do with windows, or is there a code issue where the film viewer meshes with the game software. Did the game get updated at one point and the film viewer didnt get an upgrade to mesh right? I dont know.

Let me know if you guys have issues to and if anyone has some old films.

I generally don't have any issues with film viewer weirdness unless I run ah2 films.  I run Dx 11, dx9 gives me some weirdness in the arenas, haven't looked if I had filmed in the brief experiment to eliminate that 10 min stutter many of us experience.

If you go to page 24 in the films forum, you'll see posts with attachment symbols - those are .ahf films posted in early 2020... you can run them for your experiment. You can walk your way back to page 1 looking for .ahf files.

The earliest I have since I came back in '21 are some from early '22 up until recently, but again there are numerous forum posts containing .ahf files you can view.

Here's page 24 of the films forum:   https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/board,77.575.html

And on that page a bunch of KOTH films in this post:  https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,398959.0.html
(edit: other than not loading the Koth terrain and starting in fuzeman's chute (he was observer) the films ran normally. I ran a few on other pages with no gfx glitching.  I have a newer pc now (2023) but do not recall any glitching from my prior pc, either.

I ran a few of the KOTH films and they ran fine other than issues I think is caused by "god mode". Ill run some more to see what else I can find year wise.

I always run DX9 when filming, Ill switch to DX11 and run some films through squad night to see how they come out.

Thanks.

I don’t have these issues.
The last 6-8 mos in chase mode the plane won’t center if I move and come back to it. I have to use Snap and any number key to recenter it.

OK, lets add this craziness.... I uploaded a film to dropbox, was going to ask Shane to grab it and run it on his machine to see if I was grabbing good films but couldnt play them. I pasted the link to the file in a new window, downloaded it to my desktop....not the AH films folder.... and double clicked it. Film viewer loaded up and played the film fine. Closed the film viewer, went to the same film in my films folder and it played fine. Weird right?

Went to squad night tonight, ran the game in DX11 and filmed each sortie. After Squad Ops I picked a film and and played it and it was missing layers. Did the dropbox thing again and the films that had issues were all fine.

I dont get it  :headscratch: :headscratch: :headscratch: :headscratch:

I wonder if an anti-virus is screwing with them. Different issue but I lost use of some files because of an AV.  One reason I quit using them.

Joe,
just out of curiosity have you tried opening the films directly from the the films folder, without launching the film viewer first.

I suppose its possible, but I have had the same antivirus for ever and these issues are something that has cropped up in the past few years.

I check a number of films and none of them have "read only" or "hidden" box checked in the properties.

I didnt reboot may machine last night. At this point it doesnt matter how I open the film they all seem to be working ok.... well the half dozen I have run. Im pretty sure that I had the issues opening films either way (double clicking the film file in the "films" folder, or opening them from the film viewer program).

Im finishing up another video but once I reboot this machine Ill see if it goes back to having graphic issues.

Try this, send files to shane again, turn off AV, have him send them back, see hiw long they last,

AVs update too. Used AVG for yrs, software files I write myself stopped working until I figured it out, shut it off, and they because useable again.

AVs mark files, or copies of files to mark them while on your pc. Sending them to shane may be clearing that, until AV sees them again

Something is disrupting data. IF AV is marking those files the AHFV could be reading them in the data stream and not knowing what to do with those characters. Could also be malware detections.

Wirth a shot
