Hey Eagler!
« on: February 16, 2025, 10:39:12 PM »
My 2nd second attempt at getting used to using rudders via the VKB Mark V's. I gifted my last set along with stick and throttle to nephew so he can do AH. Anyhow, my new VKB HOTAS should be here Wednesday and I have a couple questions:

Do you rest your feet on them the whole time and keep them centered? If so, do you have any dampening or dead zone going on?
I read you attached yours to wood to keep them from moving. Do you have them raised in the back? Or are they just bolted flat to the wood?

I know you use a weight bench as a seat, as do I. Do you have your TM Warthog center mounted or off to the right and throttle on the left? Or do you have them up on the desk. I'm thinking I'll bolt my stick to some sort of box mount at a good height on the right with the throttle bolted similar on the left side. All this I can figure out fine, it's the rudders I worry over. I'd like to be used to them by scenario day-I even purposely ordered a Gunfighter stick without the twist-stick in order to force the use of rudder pedals. I want the extra realism aspect.
Thanks in advance.

I know, I'm not Eagler.

Xanax, I personally just rest the ball of my foot on the bottom of the rudder pedal when I want to use them, and take my foot off of them when I'm not applying rudder. I do this to lessen inadvertent rudder input.

I use no scaling, dampening, or dead zone. I use light pressure on the pedals. I find takeoffs, and landings are a good way to help get use to using rudder pedals.

That being said, set them up so they are comfortable for you. They will take a little bit of time to get use to, but once you do you will most likely never go back.

Thanks, Sik. Good advice there as I'd prefer not to add dead zone or dampening. I do have a bit of the "Jimmy-leg" as I've never been able to keep my feet still while idle-even as a child. But keeping my feet off the things until needed might do the trick.

Howdy xanax

I usually use auto angle climb when traveling to the fight so I don't have to worry with the stick or peds then..

Like Sik1 I do this.."Xanax, I personally just rest the ball of my foot on the bottom of the rudder pedal when I want to use them, and take my foot off of them when I'm not applying rudder. I do this to lessen inadvertent rudder input.

I use no scaling, dampening, or dead zone. I use light pressure on the pedals. I find takeoffs, and landings are a good way to help get use to using rudder pedals."

My stick and throttle are clamped to the bottom of my desk with the warthog on my right, not centered

The peds are bolted to a piece of plywood that is slanted up in the back with a piece of 2x4 for a better angle for my ankles as the rudder input action is much different than using your knees with the ch pro peds sliding action..

Less is more when it comes to rudder input imo

The weight bench makes a good seat for me but I usually don't play but about an hour each evening...when I try those multi hour scenarios my butt gets numb after a while..but it allows my to get some dumbbell reps in while I climb to alt.. :joystick:

Best of luck with your 2nd attempt .. let me know if you have any other questions

There is one think for realism, and another for comfort. As an old guy, I lean toward comfort  :)

This is my setup now. The controls actually fold down and under the desk when Im not flying.

You can see my rudder pedals under the desk. I nailed a 2x4 to the floor with a cutout in the center for the wires. This way it stays in place when Im kicking it. At the office chair/desk I use now it lays flat on the floor.

However when I used my sim pit my seat was a 8-way, leather power seat from a "Cordoba" and yes the seat motors worked   :D The point tho is that the Cordoba seat was much lower so I had to raise the back side of the pedals for them to feel right and comfortable. Picture like a F1 race car seating almost layed back and stretched out. (wife hated doing the taxes in the simpit  :D )

I do use some damping and scaling in mine as the CH pedals dont lend themselves to using just the ball of your foot or toes. I pretty much just keep my feet on them all the time. I am in the process of building my own rudder pedals. Shuffler helped me out with some cut aluminum parts and when the weather warms up enough to get back out to my work shop Il get back to the building.

So, you do you. Try how some of us have our stuff and find out which works for you.

Thanks, Eagler. I'm gonna build a wood ramp similar to yours as it seems it would be more comfortable and keep them from sliding back. I'll try keeping the balls of my feet where you and Sik keep them. In myy first attempt, I kept my feet on them but my fidgety feet were causing useless input so I dead zoned it out. Thus, I wondered if you did the same. Staying off them until needed is a better plan. I have similar plans for new stick and throttle.
I'll find out how uncomfortable the bench gets during the next scenario!

Thanks again..

Great setup, Fugi, I really like how you made it so the stick and throttle can be folded out of the way so you can use the desk as an actual desk.

Heh, I can only imagine what my wife would think doing her work from the simpit

Fugitive “ leather power seat from a "Cordoba" and yes the seat motors worked”

But.. did it have full Corinthian leather still?

Very nice setup!  I like those swing down controllers.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Ricardo sold a lot of Cordobas but that leather was from New Jersey.
