No floppy drive or game port?
So the 990 Pro is for just storage like the WD Black or does the 9100 not come in 4TB yet?
That rig should be usable for quite a bit of time! Your kid is going to inherit a nice rig someday.
My kids system (2nd Fastest in the house) is almost as good as my existing System. He has a 3070Ti 32gb DDR4 and an R5 5600x I wanted to do a CPU MB Mem and GPU swap with him but he doesn't want to deal with the down time and possibly have to re-install his OS software and games.
About Storage
My Current Primary system (fastest in the house) is going to replace my Workstation/Guest Gaming System (3rd fastest) So I will have the 2 fastest systems.
C:\(OS) My OS APP and Flight Sim drive. Uses a Samsung 980 PRO 2TB, PCIe 4.0x4 M.2 2280 SSD Currently my DCS World uses 931 GB (YES 931GB for just my DCS install) I'm running out of space (>10%) On the new system this will be a faster gen 5 drive and it will only have the OS Apps and Programs on it ... No games No sims specially not DCS, They will all go on the 4tb Samsung (D:\).
D:\(Games) My Games drive. Uses a XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB, PCIe 3.0x4 M.2 2280 SSD steam alone almost filled it once. On the new system it will be a 4tb 990 Pro Gen 4 and hopefully all my games will fit on it.
E:\(Data) is my Data storage and archival drive. It is an 8TB Raid 10 Raid Array comprised of 4 Toshiba N300 4TB NAS SATA 6 GB/s 7200 RPM HDDs Mechanical hard drives and requires 4 sata ports and is actually faster than a Sata SSD and about 2/3rds to 3/4s as fast as a gen 3 NVME and as an added bonus has redundancy. In the new system this will be a Western Digital WD_BLack SN850x 8TB PCIe 4.0x4 M.2 2280 SSD
My old Motherboard has 6 Sata 6gb ports, and 2 PCIe Gen 4 NVME M.2 Slots
My new Motherboard has 4 Sata 6gb ports, 1 PCIe Gen 5 NVME M.2 Slot, 3 PCIe Gen 4 NVME M.2 Slots, and 1 PCIe Gen 3 (x2 not x4) NVME M.2 Slots (Gen 3 shares with PCIE x4 slot)
As much as I like raid I think I'm done with Mechanical Hard Drives. Making a Raid 10 array out of Sata 4TB Sata SSDs is as More Expensive and not as fast as a PCIe 4.0x4 M.2 2280 SSD the only thing the Raid 10 brings to the table is Redundancy and fault protection.
Basically I'm taking all the internals from my existing case (Thermaltake core w100) and transferring it over to another (Phanteks Enthoo Pro) and basically building a new system in the Core W-100
The 9100 Pro does come in 4 ($550) and 8 TB (Soon) but a the 4tb model is more expensive than the 4tb 990 pro gen 4 ($312 I got mine for less) and almost (90%) as expensive as the 8tb Western Digital WD_BLack SN850x ($600 I got mine bundled for less)
So long as I keep my Regular Games and DCS off of the 2tb OS drive I should have more then enough room for all my stuff.
