Discord integration into Aces High
« on: April 10, 2025, 01:27:38 PM »
API is very straight forward. All the youngins use Discord exclusively for online gaming. Thoughts?

I think it would be a great idea. Of course we would need someone to run the server as Discord is more than just voice, its almost as important as a good website. A large number of people "could" stumble upon it and learn about Aces High and maybe even check it out.

What does discord have better than AH radio?

AH radio is actually quite good. I don't think it would replace key parts of AH radio but augment the chatter amongst existing players. It would be a hangout to chat about the game, chat with country-mates while flying (or in game), and generally socialise with one another.  And if you could integrate that into AH, or even set one up for AH that we could use, it would be awesome.

I'm not sure if Discord integration would be an advantage for general gameplay, but if there were a Discord server for AH, I would join for voice and text chats as well as news updates.

I think it would be advantageous for squads to have their own Discord servers. That way, everyone can be in the same Discord voice channel when on a mission. Also, it's a great way to keep all of your squad communications in one place, and you can send push notifications as reminders for squad nights and special events.

Discord is much more than just voice. Its a community built around those on that channel. An Aces High channel would be like having the messageboards and facebook all tied together. Not only does it have the AH community you can search out other discord communities from the main page. This is where other people could stumble upon the AH page and see stuff about the game, youtube videos and public treads while keeping other stuff private to just those in the community.

I think it'd be great. I had Discord on my laptop but deleted it because it was becoming a time sink. This time, I'd keep the numbers of servers I belong to down to a minimum. I promise.

What does the integration do exactly?

I created an AH discord long ago but never advertised it because of the effort it would take to upkeep such a thing. Moderation, as well as pseudo tech support, help, training, etc. Even on the reddit now the typical response is 'just go to the forum'. It would take a dedicated team of people to keep a Discord active and in order, imo.

This community isn't that big (unfortunately), and I doubt moderation would be a huge concern. There might be some little fights to settle down, but people can self-moderate and block users if they don't want to engage. Also, I believe some bots can auto-moderate for certain language and topics that would go against Discord TOS.

If nothing else it is a lead funnel to push traffic to your main web presence.

Much much much better discoverability reach than grandpa's web.  Searchers are filtering through a much more targeted list of hits.  A lot of younger players don't hardly even do web pages and web forums anymore.  They just roll their eyes and say, "OK Boomer."

More and more the young traffic will be on Reddit and Discord.

Web pages will become like rotary land-line phones.
