In the spring of 1944, the first batch of 109's assembled under license in Romania were delivered to the Royal Romanian Air Force. Built to Bf 109G-2 standard, these Romanian built machines were designated "Bf 109Ga-2". They were painted with Romanian paints approximating the German RLM shades. The pattern differed however, as the fuselage was painted overall with the underside light gray and then given a mottle of a single darker gray paint. The wings wings and stabilizers have a simple pattern of both darker grays. The "Michael Cross" Romanian national insignia is painted in 6 positions and the Romanian colors are painted on the rudder. Yellow IFF markings standard to all Axis forces on the Eastern Front are seen on lower cowling, wing tips, and a band around the tail.
This Ga-2 was flown by commander of Grupul 7 Vânătoare, Virgil Trandafirescu in June 1944. The unit has been stationed in central Romania as part of the fighter force defending against American bomber raids on the Ploiești oil fields. Trandafirescu was shot down by a P-51 and killed in this plane defending against one such raid on June 23. Grupul 7 has spent the spring of 1944 fighting against the Soviets along the Moldavian front. The unit claimed 22 VVS aircraft shot down with another 4 being unconfirmed.
