KG 55 "Greif" He 111
« on: Yesterday at 09:41:30 PM »
He 111P (identical to the He 111H other than being equipped with Diamler-Benz engines) of 5./KG 55 "Greif" in May 1940. During the Battle of France, this unit was based at Schwaighofen and later Oedheim, in Germany. Once France surrendered, they transferred to Villacoublay, just outside of Paris. From there they continued their combat sorties against England. KG 55 targeted southern England during the Adlerangriff phase of the Battle of Britain. On August 13, they bombed the port of Plymouth, Feltham and RAF Middle Wallop - suffering no losses. However, their good fortune would run out the following day. KG 55's leader, Alois Stoeckl and his entire crew were lost when their He 111 was down by British ace Alois Stoeckl over East Dean. In total, 73 bombers of KG 55 would be lost in daylight action during the Battle of Britain.
