GPU advice

I've been looking at the "new" gpu market and nothing really jumps out at me as a good deal since the 4070 super I bought new for just over 500 a while back and the used ones currently seem to be gonig for about the same price as I paid for mine new.

Based on this I started looking at the used market to replace my EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 that I bought back at the beginning of 2022. It's starting to be unstable in VR unless I run it at 90%. I think it might need the pads replaced but it appears to be a bit of a job to do for this model.

It looks like I can get a 2080TI FTW for less then 300 with the reference models being less then 250. I was curious if anybody had any feedback on this card or another card that might be a better replacement around the same price point.

As a side note, EVGA is alleged to be the source of the utility program used by some of the gv'ers in the game, those that can see out 3k through the trees. In  talking to Hitech about it, he needs to know the name of the software before he can do anything about it. Does it come with utility programs that you are aware of?

I do not know what other sims/games you play, and at what resolution, but generally the better cards (more expensive) the more sustainable they are in the long run.
It always hurt when you have to pay up, but in the long run you probably don't need to upgrade as often.

I need to do my upgrade when/if I go VR with higher resolution than my 2k monitor can muster, else I'm good for a couple of years with my 12gig 3080.

I have a lowly 3070 (two actually) and it does everything I want since I don't do VR. Unless you're doing VR then a 4070 Super should be more than up to any task for at least a couple of years.

The ftw card has become unstable and crashes even when temps are not high when running VR. It run fine otherwise. I have to set it to 90% for it to be stable so I figured maybe it was time to replace it.

I looked at the current prices for gpus and seeing that the 4070 Super is currently selling used for the same price as I paid for mine new over a year ago, decided that the new GPU market is out of wack and was looking at some used bang for the buck. It looks like I can get a 2080ti ftw for around 270 and a reference 2080ti for around 250, that seemed like decent bang for the buck.

I don't see any new cards that offer substantial uplift in raw raster performance and there seems to be a good deal of "gamery" using DLSS or RT to "increase" frame rates while not offering much of an upgrade in raw performance. Since the 2080ti is selling at about 25% of it's MSRP, I thought it might be a decent deal.

The 2080TI and 3070 are comparable in performance. I think the 2080ti can be had on ebay a little cheaper but it is older.

I see the 3070 on ebay for a little cheaper then the 2080ti. The cheapest listing I've seen with a quick search is $239 for the 3070 and $249 for the 2080ti.  It looks like it only has 8gb of vram though and I'm not sure that's enough these days. It looks like the 3070 is 10-15% faster then the 2080TI but I'm concerned about the vram as from what I've read most games these days are pushing past 8gb.

The 2080ti has 11gb for a slightly higher price. Not sure if a little more memory or a little more horsepower is the better play.

After doing some research and consulting with AI, I've come to the conclusion that 8GB of vram isn't going to have the longevity that I'm looking for. Currently I'm considering the 2080ti and the upcoming 5070 super with 18GB of vram. The problem with this one is that it might be another one of those cards that is like the 9070XT, nowhere near MSRP. I would have bought the 9070XT but I refused to pay $150 over MSRP for a gpu and I won't pay over $600 for a new GPU. I think these $1,500+ price are ridiculous, especially since it' been reported that Nvidia is making over 50% profit on these high end cards.

Have you considered an Intel Arc? The A series seem to slowly be discontinued but there's rumours about the B series getting more variants in the not so distant future. At least the price is right, the compatibility with your games is a question mark. If the game is compatible the performance level is good.
